Pioneer players honored

Four Pioneers were named to the 2014 All-Mideast Regional team, led by first team sophomore pitchers Christian Herstine and Jason Byers, with Herstine picking up Pitcher of the Year in the region. Senior outfielder Josh Ungerbuehler and junior catcher Chris Winpigler earned second team honors.

Herstine and Byers were quite the one-two punch for the Pioneers having a combined 19-3 record on the mound. They also fanned a combined 173 batters.

Fresh off winning the Ohio Athletic Conference Kent Tekulve Pitcher of the Year award, Herstine can add Mideast Regional Pitcher of the Year to his honors for this season. Herstine went 9-1 on the year with a 1.20 earned run average, which led the OAC. He also tossed a no hitter against Montclair State back in March.

The lefty Byers was recognized on the All-Mideast Region first team after receiving Rookie of the Year honors last season.

Byers went 10-2 on the year to go along with a 2.93 ERA. His ten wins were tops in the OAC and he also led the conference with 91 strikeouts.

Second teamers Ungerbuehler and Winpigler kept the bats hot throughout the season, as they were two of the top hitters in the Pioneer lineup.

Ungerbuehler batted .351 during his senior campaign playing in all 46 games. He also had a team high 60 hits which placed him in the top ten in the OAC.

Winpigler had a team best .376 batting average and finished the season on a 13 game hitting streak.

Winpigler’s 37 RBIs led the team as well. He had 10 doubles, which was second on the team, and he also belted three homers.

Marietta finished the season 30-16 overall and claimed the OAC regular season championship with a 15-3 league record.
