Pioneers, Widener to play Saturday morning

Thanks to Mother Nature, there will be baseball at Don Schaly Stadium Monday.

While two contests were played Friday in the 2014 NCAA Division III Mideast Regional, the winner’s bracket contests were rained out- again.

Host and top-seeded Marietta (30-14) is scheduled to face fourth-seeded Widener (32-11) at 10 a.m. and No. 3 Salisbury (34-7) will face No. 2 Case Western Reserve (31-10) at 1:15 p.m.

Loser’s bracket games are slated for 4:30 p.m. and 7:45 p.m.

All games scheduled on Thursday were postponed due to the weather.

On Friday, play resumed with La Roche defeating Penn State University-Berks 7-1 in an elimination game

Tyler Ferguson (11-4) fanned 10 and allowed just four hits in a complete-game triumph for the Redhawks.

Offensively for Chase Rowe-coached La Roche (31-14), catcher Matt Sabatini was 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored a run; shortstop Sean Lubin also went 2-for-4 with one RBI and third baseman Colin Williamson drove in two runs.

PSU starter Kyle Hartman (6-5) suffered the mound setback. La Roche is now scheduled to play the loser of Salisbury and Case Western in another elimination game Saturday at 1 p.m.

In the second game, Thomas More stunned John Carroll University with a four-run rally in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie and then went on to edge the Blue Streaks 9-8 in 12 innings.

TM frosh Thomas Baumann had a clutch two-out hit in the bottom of the 12th for the win. In the top of the frame, he threw out a JCU runner at the plate to end the game. Chris Auer (4-0) hurled the final three innings for the win, while Donovan Pogue and Travis Miller each stroked three hits.

John Carroll’s Jimmy Spagna went 3-for-6 with three RBI, while Mark Huddle, Chet Lauer, Bobby Sabatino and Mitchell Herringshaw each added two hits. The Blue Streaks were the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament champion.

In other D3 regional baseball action, Heidelberg University (31-13), an OAC opponent of the Pioneers, went two-and-out in the Midwest event at Whitewater, Wis. In an elimination game, St. Norbert College ousted the Student Princes, 9-5, Thursday. In Wednesday’s tournament opener, Matt Palm-coached Berg dropped an 8-1 decision to Adrian College.

Heidelberg closed out its season winless in May, at 0-6, including two losses in the OAC Tournament at Don Schaly Stadium.

Baldwin-Wallace University, another OAC opponent of the Pioneers, is still in the winner’s bracket in the Mid-Atlantic Regional at PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.

The Yellow Jackets beat Misericordia (Pa.) 8-4 Wednesday and Haverford (Pa.) College 10-2 Thursday, and is scheduled to play Susquehanna (Pa.) University Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
