Prep baseball: Cadets advance
STEUBENVILLE – Fort Frye baseball has advanced to a Division III East District championship game Thursday.
The Cadets defeated Shenandoah, 6-3, in a district semifinal contest Tuesday evening at Chillicothe Paints Stadium to stay alive in the postseason.
The Sonny Bidwell-coached Cadets scored two runs in the first off Zeps starter Ryan Lovette. Shenandoah got on the board in the third to make it a 2-1 game, but Fort Frye added another run in the fourth off reliever Cody Crum to go back up by two.
Shenandoah knotted things up in the top of the fifth with a pair of runs to chase Cadets starter Derek Layton. Fort Frye, though, answered with two runs in bottom of the fifth and then another in the sixth to take a 6-3 lead.
That was enough of a cushion for relievers Colten Shuster and Brad Martin, who combined to shut out the Zeps in the final three innings to give Fort Frye the victory.
Shuster was credited with the win (4-0) while Martin picked up his fourth save of the season. Crum took the loss (1-3), striking out three and walking two in five innings of work. Layton struck out two and walked four in the no-decision.
Shenandoah totaled three hits in the game. Tanner Moore and Kaleb Thompson both had doubles, with Moore adding two runs batted in. Jacob Rossiter scored two runs. The Zeps had three errors.
For the Cadets, Chandler Lang and Issac Klinger both had two hits, with one of Lang’s knocks being a double. Layton drove in a pair of runs and Shuster and Tanner Rice knocked in a run apiece. They committed one error.
Fort Frye (20-2) will play the winner of today’s Bellaire, Coshocton game Thursday for a district title at Paints Stadium.
Shenandoah (9-15) was eliminated from postseason play.
