Tiger Navy competes at nationals

PRINCETON, N.J. – At Marietta High’s weekend trip to the Scholastic Rowing Association of America Nationals at Mercer Lake in N.J., the Tiger Navy saw both of their boats claim top 10 finishes.

The girls’ lightweight varsity eight placed seventh in the nation, advancing to the semi-finals but failing to make the grand final. Still, an impressive showing for Joe Tewkesbury’s girls team.

The boys’ junior four competed in a tough heat and as a result did not qualify for the semifinals. However, their time was still good enough to give them a spot in the top 10.

Said boys head coach Tanner O’Connor “Just getting to nationals is a huge accomplishment for us. The program has been low in number of athletes the past few years and we have suffered a loss of speed because of it. Fortunately, we were able to turn that downward trend around and it paid off for us this year. We hope to have several years now of good racing and hopefully we can bring a national title back to Marietta. While it would have been great to have our boats be in the final, we can’t be disappointed with having two crews who are top ten in the nation. It is quite exciting.”

The Tiger Navy now turns its attention to the offseason, when it will be holding camps and clinics throughout the summer.
