Beverly falls to Chilli

From staff reports

LANCASTER – Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750 opened the Lancaster Post 11 Baseball Classic with a 4-1 loss to Chillicothe Post 757 at Beavers Field Tuesday.

Beverly/Lowell scored first but Chillicothe put up four unanswered runs to pick up the victory.

“I was pretty disappointed today,” said Post 389/750 skipper Todd Engle.

Engle said his club looked a bit lethargic Tuesday and noted that Lancaster has always been a tough place to play.

“I don’t know what it is about that place but we just don’t do very well over there,” he said. “Today was just one of them days.”

B/L got on the board early in the game when a Justin Hill groundout plated Blake Kidder from third. Kidder tripled earlier in the inning.

However, that was all the offense could muster. B/L did load the bases with two outs in the seventh, but Estes’ sharp ground ball was fielded cleanly by the shortstop, who went to second for the forceout and end the game. Estes doubled earlier in the game and hit the ball hard three times.

Phillip Hoffman (1-4) pitched the first 5.1 innings of the game for B/L while Hill took over for the final 1.2 innings.

Chillicothe out-hit B/L 12-6. B/L did not commit an error while Chillicothe had one.

Engle admitted his team needs to improve and is optimistic that will happen. With players getting healthy and returning from vacations and other activities, the roster is starting to look like what Engle envisioned before the season began.

“We’ve got some stuff we’ve got to get fixed before the district tournament, and I think we will,” Engle said.

Beverly/Lowell (15-12) will try to bounce back today when it takes on Prospect Post 368 at 6 p.m. Engle said Ben Barnas will be on the mound for Post 389/750.
