Williamstown golfer wins MOVJGA tour stop

ELIZABETH, W.Va. – Williamstown’s Mac McCormick fired a 2-under-par 34 on the back nine here Wednesday at Mingo Bottom Golf Club, finishing with a 4-over 76 to win the Mid-Ohio Valley Junior Golf Association 16-18 age division.

Not to be outdone, Parkersburg South’s Chance Shears won his second consecutive 13-15 crown after carding a 7-over 79. In the 12-and-under group, Zach Redmon (43) and Blake Snyder (56) had another one-two finish after taking on the 3,258-yard, par-36 front nine.

McCormick, who started his day with a triple-bogey on the par-3 third, battled back with consecutive birdies at five and six. On his back nine, he made birdie on all three pat-5s as well as the 409-yard, par-4 12th. Although he closed his final two holes with a bogey on No. 1 and a double-bogey on No. 2, he did enough to outlast Ravenswood’s Alex Easthom and Marietta’s Garrett Bertram, who tied for second with respective 78s.

Also starting on the par-3 third, Easthom played a more than solid round, only to have it all go awry down the stretch. After playing the first 15 holes at 1-over, which included back-to-back birdies on 14 and 15, an errant tee shot on 18 led to a triple-bogey. Despite finishing his round with a par on No. 2, another lost ball led to a double-bogey on the first.

Easthom actually shot 39s on both sides, while Bertram went 43 on the front with a 1-under-par 35 on the back to card his round of 78.

Trevor Gorrell (43-41=84) finished a solid fourth and was followed by Alec Milhoan (85), Noah Smith (86) and Dalton Smith (90) in the 16-18 age group.

Shears (41-38) was challenged on the 6,312-yard layout for the 13-15 age division by runner-up Whitney Milhoan (42-40=84) and third-place Heath Hill (43-40=83). Caleb Scharff (89) was fourth while Cody Greathouse and Jordan Mader tied for fifth at 105.

Redmond, who will be a seventh-grader at Edison Middle School, had a trio of pars on three, seven and nine – the closing dogleg left par-5 – during his 7-over round. Tyler Bagley (62), Mace Busch (65) and Kelsey Smith (70) comprised the top five in the 12-and-under division.

The MOVJGA will return to action with an 8 a.m. start on Tuesday at South Hills.
