Wildcats sweep Eagles

WATERFORD – It may have taken the Waterford Lady Wildcat volleyball team a little bit of time to get things going Thursday night in their season opener against Belpre, but when they did, they did so in a big way as they swept the Lady Golden Eagles 25-15, 25-4, and 25-17.

Belpre scored the game’s first four points and led 10-5 before the Lady ‘Cats got untracked as they scored 20 of the final 25 points of the opening game.

“I think we might have come out with some of those opening game jitters,” said Waterford head coach Jandy Drayer. “Once we got into the game a little bit and got settled down things started to go a little better.”

The green and white picked right up where they left off in the opening game in the second as they scored 16 of the first 18 points and the final six as they easily pulled away to the 21-point win.

Paced by outstanding play at the net from the likes of Taylor Hilverding, Dani Drayer and Maddie Sury the Lady ‘Cats looked like a completely different team than the one that began the game.

“Our passing was a lot better in that second game than it was in the first,” said Drayer. “We weren’t getting the passes pushed up to the net very well but once we did we were able to move our offense the way we want to.”

The Wildcats looked like they were going to repeat their dominant middle game in the final one as they jumped out to a 6-2 lead but the Lady Eagles came charging back to tie things up at 14-14.

That would be as close as the orange and black would get however as Waterford went on a 5-0 run and scored 11 of the final 14 points to seal their first win of what it hopes will be many in the 2014 campaign.

Hilverding accounted for 10 kills, and seven digs, Dani Drayer chipped in with nine kills and eight digs, while Sury totaled six kills, and five digs to go along with seven aces.

Jillian McCutcheon had a solid game as well for the Lady Wildcats as she came up with a game high 26 assists to go along with nine digs and three aces.

Belpre fell to 0-2 with the loss.
