Ravenswood boys roll past St. Marys

RAVENSWOOD – Ravenswood’s Isaiah Morgan and Riley Heatherington combined for 60 points at The Pit on Wednesday night, leading the Red Devils to an 82-53 rout of visiting St. Marys. Ravenswood shot the proverbial lights out, draining 11 3-pointers, seven of them by the prolific Morgan.

“We have good shooters,” said a happy Ravenswood coach Mick Price. “Isaiah shot well, and Riley got to the rim well; he’s been working hard on that.”

The Red Devils began the game in form, jumping out to a 9-0 lead behind back-to-back 3-pointers by Morgan. Morgan’s 11 points in the opening stanza led to a 22-14 Ravenswood lead as the first quarter expired.

The Ravenswood defense stepped to the fore in the second, holding the Blue Devils to six points in the quarter. Treys by Morgan and Heatherington set the pace as Ravenswood cruised to an 18 point halftime lead.

Morgan opened the second half with another 3, and the Red Devils had their most productive quarter with 25 points. Heatherington added nine points in the frame, and point guard Hayden Mandrake scored six, including a couple of athletic drives to the rim.

Coach Price praised Mandrake, who has recovered from an injury incurred playing football which left him with four pins in his right hand. “He did a good job running the offense; he only had one turnover. He’s a good kid, and works hard.”

St. Marys had its most competitive period in the fourth, as reserve players entered the game for both sides, but it was too little, too late. A disappointed St. Marys coach Mark Barnhart commented, “when you lose to a team by 30 when you have seniors and they have juniors and sophomores, it’s a gut check.” On the positive side, he added, “in the second half we passed the ball well and got some good shots, and Will Billeter (who finished with eight points) was solid the whole game.”

Ravenswood’s Price, while pleased overall, still sees areas where improvement is needed, saying, “we got off to a good start, but I thought the defense in the second half was poor. When you give up 35 points in the second half, you have a lot of work to do.”

The two-headed monster of Morgan and Heatherington scored 31 and 29 points respectively for the Red Devils, while Sam Kincaid led St. Marys with 14. Ravenswood stays perfect on the year at 4-0, while the Blue Devils fall to 2-2.
