Herstine leads Pioneers to win

From staff reports

PITTSBURGH, Penn. – Christian Herstine struck out a career-high 14 batters and Joe Begany smacked a solo home run leading Marietta College to a 1-0 win over case Western Reserve University Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers then dropped a 6-1 decision to host La Roche College in the game two and is now 8-6 on the season.

Herstine (1-2) allowed just four Case Western batters to reach base en route to his first win of the season.

He limited the Spartans to one single, walked two and one reached on a Pioneer error.

In addition to his strong pitching, Herstine helped himself defensively with six assists in the game.

Begany provided the only run of the game when he lined the first pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning over the right field wall for his second home run of the season.

Case Western (8-9 overall) had its biggest scoring threat in the top of the eighth. Wade Hopper pinch hit to lead off the inning and earned a walk. Daniel Watson ran for Hopper at first and two straight passed balls moved him to third with no outs.

Herstine rose to the challenge striking out the next two Spartan batters. He then induced an inning ending ground out to preserve the 1-0 Marietta lead.

Mark Gross (1-3) started on the mound for Case Western and kept the Marietta bats in check until Begany’s home run.

Gross worked 6.1 innings and scattered seven hits. He walked two and struck out two. Liam Killingstad pitched the final 1.2 innings.

Mike Hale was 2-for-3 with a double, while Begany finished 1-for-3 with the game winning round tripper.

La Roche (12-5 overall) touched up Pioneers starter Tommy Crowl for five runs in the bottom of the first inning of game two. The Redhawks sent nine batters to the plate in the first frame collecting four base hits.

Marietta got on the board in the third inning. Michael Barnabei led off with a double down the leftfield line. He moved to third on a ground out by Chandler Palyas and scored on a single through the left side of the infield off the bat of Tanner Wood (Athens, Ohio/Athens).

Crowl (0-2) threw 2.1 innings and was charged with five runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out one. Kordell Antill had another strong performance out of the bullpen. Antill tossed 2.2 innings of shutout relief striking out two. David Stover gave up one run in three innings of work.

Regis Sauer (3-0) went seven innings to get the win for La Roche. He allowed one run on five hits and struck out two. Justin Johnson threw the final two innings.

Barnabei led the Pioneers with two hits in four at bats.

The Pioneers open Ohio Athletic Conference play on Friday at the University of Mount Union. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m.
