Williamstown softball tops Ravenswood, 12-2

WILLIAMSTOWN – Williamstown High School scored early and often as the Yellowjackets rolled to a 12-2 four-inning victory Wednesday evening over visiting Ravenswood.

WHS (1-1) scored three runs in each of the first two innings and then broke things wide open when its scored four times in the third.

The early offensive output provided Yellowjacket starting pitcher Nellie King a bit of breathing room and the junior lefty responded by limiting Ravenswood to just three hits and a run in her three innings of work.

King allowed a solo home run to straight away center field to Ravenswood freshman Kendall Brown in the first inning before recovering to gain the win while fanning four Red Devils.

“She’s a very good pitcher and she realizes that girls are going to get a hold of a ball every once in awhile,” said Williamstown head coach Kayla Stanley of King. “She had a very good screwball and was very confident and emotionally locked in tonight.”

The Yellowjacket offense was quite locked in as well as the first five hitters reached base in the opening inning.

Leadoff batter Breagan Wright and number two hitter Courtney Dotson collected back-to-back singles to get things going.

Wright scored on a double steal and after Kayla Scott drew a base on balls, Kristin Harmon doubled to give the ‘Jackets a 2-1 lead.

A single by King capped the three-run first inning, a total Williamstown would match in its second at-bat.

Wright and Scott each delivered run-scoring hits in the second inning and Harmon brought in the third run of the inning on an infield groundout.

With King holding the Ravenswood hitters in check, Williamstown added four more runs in the bottom of the third.

Dotson and King had RBI singles in a third inning as the ‘Jackets took advantage of some wildness by Red Devil starter and losing pitcher Dezirae Lester as well as some shotty defense by a Ravenswood team that committed four errors in the game.

Sarah Hendrickson allowed an unearned run to the Red Devils in the top of the fourth before Wright’s two-run double in the bottom half of the inning produced a mercy rule that brought an end to the game.

Wright collected three hits in the game while also scoring and knocking in three runs.

After a tough one-run loss to Buffalo in their season opener, Stanley was pleased with the way her young team responded in their home opener.

“We are a very young and inexperienced team this year after losing six starters from last year and yesterday (Tuesday) was a tough day for us,” said Stanley. “All of our girls made massive improvements from yesterday to today and I am quite pleased with the way they played.”

Ravenswood head coach Cindy Carmichael has a very young team as well and feels like better days are ahead for her Red Devils (0-2).

“You wouldn’t know it based on the way we played tonight, but I still think that this could be one of the better teams I have coached,” said Carmichael. “We will continue to keep improving and in the long run things will look up for us.”
