Callaway Jr. Golf Tour visits Marietta Country Club

It’s often said that competition usually breeds success.

For those that participate in sports of any kind the thrill of competition generally is the most important aspect of any athletic contest and while having fun is also important, the ultimate goal is to emerge as the victor.

At the Callaway Junior Tour the competition was in full swing (no pun intended) Tuesday here at the Marietta Country Club.

Things got underway promptly at 8:30 a.m. as 70 kids some from various Mid-Ohio Valley schools enjoyed an abundant day of sunshine and absolutely gorgeous course conditions.

On a day that featured a total of 33 birdies, 290 pars, 397 bogeys and 231 double bogeys, the second hole, a 470-yard par 5, was the hole that had the most birdies with seven, plus 16 pars, 15 bogeys (the fewest on the day for any of the holes) and 16 double bogeys.

The shortest hole on the course was the 131-yard par 3 on No. 17. This was another hole where players fared well at least in terms of pars which totaled 27, the second most bogeys at 25 and fewest double bogeys (6), but only two birdies were merited, however.

Players were paired in groups of three or four ranging from various ages for boys, starting at 12-and-under all the way to 17-18 and girls starting at 10 all the way to 18. Each golfer is vying for a potential spot in the first playoff series that will take place at the Parkersburg Country Club at the end of the season.

Tuesday in the boys division for 12-and-under, Jacob Kalaskey finished first with a score of 82, while Gareth Ryder (108) took second place and William Barniak (127) was third.

Ryan Bibly lead the way for the 13-14 age group with a final round score of 78. Trey Blain was second at 82, Andrew Kirtley was third with an 84, Zachary Redmon was fourth with an 87 and Luke Krol secured fifth place with an 89.

In the 15-16 division, Parkersburg South’s Logan Clegg took first place with a score of 78 while Marietta’s Caleb Scharff shot an 86 which put him in a tie with Aaron Yorio for fifth place.

For the 17-18 age division Christian Mckisic turned in the lowest round of the day with a 71. Representing Washington County in the oldest boys division was Warren’s Kyler Dennis in third and Waterford’s Jordan Welch in fourth. Dennis carded a 76 while Welch finished at 79. Warren’s Josh Jankausakas shot an 84 to place seventh in the division.

On the girls side, Molly McLean finished in first for the 10-14 age group with a score of 102.

The 15-18 age group was lead by Katelyn Sanders who finished in first shooting 80, the lowest round of the day among the girls.

Parkersburg’s Whitney Milhoan finished with an 89 tying her for fifth place with her partner.

While his final round of 78 was only a bit off the pace for lowest score of the day Clegg mentioned he felt good about his play, especially when it came to striking the golf ball.

“I’m feeling really good,” said Clegg. “I struck the ball pretty well and came out pretty good.”

In addition to striking, Clegg, who has played in the tournament for three years, also said he putted the ball extremely well…at least at the start.

“My putting started off great, the first few greens I was one-putting 20-footers for birdie and par,” he said. “As it went on they started drying out, not breaking as much, but I was still two-putting stuff for par, so I can’t complain.”

The tour will continue today at Greenhills Country Club in Ravenswood.
