Local youth Hunter Grimm to play in All American games

TORCH, Ohio – When Hunter Grimm returns to school in late August, he’ll have quite a summer story to share with his classmates and teammates.

The 11-year-old youth baseball catcher is scheduled to compete in the USSSA All American Games at Disney’s ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Fl., Aug. 7-13.

“Hunter is a very hard worker and is passionate about baseball,” said Bartlett Misfits 12u skipper Ryan Grimm (also Hunter’s father).

He’s also very talented.

In early May, the younger Grimm participated in the USSSA State Championship at the Lou Berliner Athletic Complex in Columbus, where his game was evaluated. During the tryout, he hit, ran and fielded.

The right-handed-throwing and hitting Grimm is listed as a backstop, but actually can play anywhere on the diamond, including on the bump.

Scoring high and making an impression, Grimm was one of 12 10u Direct Select players who qualified and were chosen to represent the Great Lakes Region in the Orlando showcase in August. There, he’ll compete with other regions in the country.

Shortly after the Columbus tryout, the Bartlett Misfits were slated to open up its 12u season against the Parkersburg Heat at Shawd Field in Bartlett May 10. But the contest was rained out.

The Misfits have been together as a team since 2012. Along with Grimm, some of the other players on the 2016 roster were J.T. Rice, Mason Jackson, Issac Wendelken, Brennan Perdue, Hunter Vincent, Dennis Pettey, Gavin Kitts, Ashton Saling, and Gabe Hendrix.

This summer, the Misfits also played the Marietta Monsters, Marietta Sluggers, Southeastern Sluggers, Pittsburg Outlaws, Tricounty, Morgan Raiders, Ripley Vikings, Woodsfield Strikers, Ohio River Ruckus, Smoking Guns, Hilliard Panthers, and Licking County Outlaws.

The Misfits finished the season with a 5-7 record.

After Grimm’s Florida trip, he will be attending Warren Middle School through open enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year. Late, if he goes on to Warren High, his scheduled date for high school graduation is 2023.
