Ohio sectional boys’ golf action begins this week

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Marietta golfer Heath Hill competes in a high school match against Warren earlier this season at Marietta Country Club.

Waterford High has enjoyed a solid season on the links.

The Wildcat golfers are hoping to extend their play on the course when they compete in the Southeast Division 3 sectional tournament Wednesday at 9 a.m. at the Jaycees Golf Course in Chillicothe.

“I am very pleased with my men playing this year,” said first-year WHS golf coach Brandyn Offenberger. “Lately we have played very well, ending the season strong and getting the TVC (Tri-Valley Conference) title.

“I am very confident as my team is going into sectionals and should have a great outcome.”

Waterford’s postseason line-up is expected to feature Jordan Welch, Wes Jenkins Travis Pottmeyer, Evan Seevers, and Matt Semon.

“It’s very nice having someone like Jordan (Welch) on the team and knowing he will give a solid score every night,” Offenberger said. “For the rest of the team they are very capable of throwing a very well-mannered score in as well. It’s fun watching these young men grow everyday on the course.”

Also in the field at Jaycees will be Belpre, Adena, Crooksville, Eastern (Beaver), Eastern (Reedsville), Federal Hocking, Huntington, Lynchburg-Clay, Miller, Paint Valley, South Gallia, Southeastern, Southern, and Trimble.

The top five teams and five individuals, not on a qualifying team, will advance to Monday’s district tourney at The Elks Country Club in McDermott.

“This season has went very well, but Wildcat golf is not done yet,” Offenberger said.

Belpre’s starters are expected to include Jerimiah Stitt, Hunter Gilbert, Madie Roby, and Britteny Schaffer.

Also teeing off in sectional play this week will be Fort Frye at the Sugarcreek Willandale Golf Club in Sugarcreek at 9-10 a.m. today (Tuesday).

The probable Cadet players will be Ben Wagner, Kyle Massey, Brady Smith, Derek Joy, and Evan Moler or Zach Nesselroad.

Warren and Marietta are slated to be in Southeast D1 sectional play next Monday (Oct. 3) at 9 a.m. at the Hocking Hills Golf Club in Logan.

The Nathan Evans-coached Warriors, 10-0 in league play, have had a banner season, winning their first Class 5A OVAC (Ohio Valley Athletic Conference) championship at Oglebay’s Jones Course on Sept. 15. The following week, the royal blue and white linksters set a school 9-hole record of 144 in their last SEOAL (Southeastern Ohio Athletic League) match of the campaign at Hocking Hills.

Warren’s sectional line-up is expected to feature 2015 state qualifier Nick Ward, 2016 SEOAL Player of the Year Kyler Dennis, Josh Jankauskas, Max Hapney, and Austin Barta or Casey Rafferty.

Ward, Dennis, Jankauskas, and Hapney each was an all-league honoree.

Marietta’s probable starters will be Caleb Scharff, Heath Hill, Matthew Earley, Lake Satterfield, and Jared Hollister. The Tigers are coached by first-year varsity boss Chad Deem.

Also in the field will be Athens, Chillicothe, Hillsboro, Jackson, Logan, and Miami Trace.

In the D1 tourney at HH, the top four teams and four individuals, not on a qualifying team, advance to March 10’s district competition at Eaglesticks GC in Zanesville.
