Marietta boys overpowered by Chillicothe, 7-2

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Marietta’s Ryan Mannix (12) and Chillicothe’s Hudson Ward (13) battle for position during a district semifinal soccer match Wednesday at Logan High School.

LOGAN — Ian Coleman got a pretty good workout between the pipes.

The junior Marietta High keeper was bombarded by 25 Chillicothe High shots in a 7-2 Division II district boys’ soccer semifinal setback Wednesday night at Logan High.

Thing is, it could’ve been worse if Coleman hadn’t made 10 saves. Plus, one Cavs’ goal was nullified in the first half due to a foul.

“We got outclassed,” said veteran MHS head coach Todd Morris, whose Tigers only lost 1-0 to the Cavaliers during the regular season. “We took one on the chin tonight. They’re 16-1-1 for a reason. They’re quality. They’re well-coached and disciplined. They played so simple. They played so well. My hat’s off to them.”

Chillicothe, 10th-ranked in D2, advances to Saturday’s district final at LHS. Matthew Detty and John Graves each had two goals to pace the Cavs. Alec Beavers, Joseph Herlihy, and Hudson Ward added one score apiece.

“We played pretty good,” said Cavaliers’ boss Mike McCorkle, whose team has scored 97 total goals this season. “We’ve really been finishing well lately. All year, we’ve been working on getting better offensively. I think we’re starting to get it together now.”

CHS keeper Max Krieger was credited with four saves.

“We’ve only given up seven goals,” McCorkle said. “So, Marietta scoring two on us is about as many as we’ve given up in a game all year.

“We don’t like giving up two goals, but Marietta’s tough.”

Marietta, which exits with an 8-7-2 overall mark, got goals from Austyn Chen and John Mannix. Ryan Mannix and Chen each had an assist.

“We’re young still,” Morris said. “We just need to learn from this. And, as long as we learn from this, we should be OK.”

CHS staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. when Detty put the finishing touch on Ward’s cross from the right wing. Then, Beavers got an unassisted goal to stretch it to 2-0.

About midway through the first half, Chen beat Krieger with a hard shot to cut it to one. Ryan Mannix got the assist.

“We got ourselves back in it,” Morris said. “But they (Cavaliers) finished their opportunities.”

Before the opening half was over, CHS would tack on two more scores by Herlihy and Graves, respectively, and take a 4-1 lead.

Early in the second half, Ward scored with Christian Brown assisting to make it 5-1.

MHS cut it to three on John Mannix’s goal. Chen got the assist.

Capping all the scoring, Graves and Detty each put their second one in the back of the net.

“We just couldn’t stop the bleeding,” Morris said. “They’re a great team, and they took advantage of the little mistakes we made that let them get into space and get some good looks on goal.”
