Warren wins season-opener
POMEROY — Warren trailed briefly in the first half but in the end was too much for Meigs in a 60-47 victory Tuesday night.
The Warriors won their season-opener after shooting 43 percent (26 for 60) from the floor.
Chase Weihl stood out for the Warriors, scoring a game-high 22 points and adding seven rebounds and an impressive five blocks and two slam dunks. Josh Huffman added 12 points and nine boards and Kyler Dennis scored 13.
Luke Musser led the Marauders with 16 points. Dillon Mahr added 13 while Christian Mattox tallied 10.
The Warriors trailed 24-23 with 1:07 to play in the second period, but Dennis’ free throw with 15.5 seconds left made it 25-24 and gave Warren the lead for good.
Marietta 57,
Alexander 49
ALBANY — Marietta High got a game-high 26 points from Trent Dawson in a 57-49 win over Alexander Tuesday night.
The visiting Tigers (2-0) held a commanding 23-4 lead after one quarter, but Alexander cut the lead to as little as two points in the third quarter. However, Marietta held on to the lead and secured the victory.
Dawson hit four 3-pointers and was 6 for 9 from the foul line in the contest. Isaac Danford scored 12 and was the only other Tiger in double figures.
Kam Riley led the Spartans with 14 points while Chace Harris added 13.
The Tigers will play their first East Central Ohio League game Friday when they visit Zanesville for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
Morgan 58, Tri-Valley 57
DRESDEN — The Morgan Raiders scored their first victory at Tri-Valley since 2004 Tuesday.
Morgan brushed off a 36-23 halftime deficit to win 58-57. A 21-9 run in the third quarter was the turning point.
Dre Norman was the Raiders’ top scorer, finishing with 21 points and four 3-pointers. Jordan Work added 16 points.
Jake McLaughlin led the Scotties with 16 points while Dan Cameron and Matt King scored 13 apiece.
Barnesville 66,
Shenandoah 63 (OT)
BARNESVILLE — Shenandoah led 20-12 after a quarter over host Barnesville Tuesday night, but the Zeps were unable to hold on and ended falling 66-63 in overtime.
Shenandoah (0-2) was outscored 10-7 in the decisive extra session.
Kendall Sherman led the Zeps with 15 points while Boone Jones and Tanner Brown added 10 apiece.
The Zeps will look to bounce back at Caldwell Friday night.
Magnolia 76,
Monroe Central 52
WOODSFIELD, Ohio — Preseason Class A No. 10 Magnolia, which averaged 72 points per game a season ago but returned just eight points an outing on average entering this year, got a career-high 30-point effort from senior Tyler Williamson here Tuesday night as the Blue Eagles rolled past Monroe Central, 76-52.
The Seminoles, who dropped to 1-1 and trailed just 36-31 at intermission, were outscored 24-8 in the third quarter. Trey Duffy (20) and Ryan Lafollette (17) led the hosts in scoring.
Magnolia, which will eye a 2-0 start for head man Dave Tallman when the Blue Eagles return to action with a home tilt next Tuesday versus Tyler Consolidated, also received 20 points from Leo Herrick and 10 markers from Brooks Parsons.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Parkersburg Catholic 83, Tyler Consolidated 57
KIDWELL — Senior Alexis Saunders dropped a career-high 32 points against Tyler Consolidated on Tuesday evening as visiting Parkersburg Catholic rolled past the Silver Knights, 83-57.
The Crusaderettes (2-0), who play Saturday afternoon at Union, also had double figure point-production by Mikayla Alkire (17), Madeline Huffman (14) and Emma Pfeiffer (10).
The 0-2 Silver Knights, set to play Friday at St. Marys, was led by Josey Jones’ 19 points. Peyton Kocher chipped in 14 markers and JoLee Walton tallied 11.
