Marietta High boys soccer team features depth

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Marietta High’s Austyn Chen battles for the ball during a high school soccer match last season in Devola. Chen, now a senior, leads a deep Tigers with high expectations into the 2017 fall season.

DEVOLA — Austyn Chen is a proven scorer.

The 5-foot-9 Marietta High senior striker figures to be a marked player on the pitch this upcoming season. Recently, the speedy forward received the Golden Boot award after scoring eight goals in the Athens Preseason Soccer Shootout.

“Scoring is just my role on the team,” said Chen, who recorded a team-high 11 goals and six assists last fall. “It’s my job to score goals. Everyone else has their role.”

Chen and senior teammate John Mannix, who had seven goals and seven assists a year ago, could be a one-two punch for the Tiger booters this season.

“We’ve got our top two goal-scorers back,” said 10th-year MHS boys’ soccer coach Todd Morris. “But we’ve got a lot of guys offensively who can put the ball in the net.”

Last season, Marietta finished with a solid 8-7-2 overall record. The Tigers claimed a D2 sectional championship before bowing out to the 10th-ranked Chillicothe Cavaliers, 7-2, in a district semifinal at Logan High. From that squad, MHS graduated four seniors, including standouts’ Ben Dehmlow and Nathan Westfall.

The Tigers also lost starting midfielder Gage Herb to the golf team.

“We have a good senior class and a lot of returning lettermen,” Morris said. “At times last year we were playing three or four freshmen. So those guys are coming back as sophomores.”

During the weekend Athens Shootout, Marietta High was 2-0-1 in group play with wins against Athens and eventual tourney champion Bexley and a draw versus Alexander. In the knockout stage of the tournament, the Tigers blanked North Adams, 3-0, but then were defeated by Logan in the semis.

“Right now, we’re just trying to figure out where all the pieces fit together,” Morris said. “We’re trying to build and see where we’re going to be.”

Some other Tigers to keep an eye on will be defender Max Miller, mid Jake Craven, mid Ryan Mannix, center back Sean Fournier, defender Cade Gandor, Dakota Lee, and keeper Ian Coleman.

Justin LaBarre is expected to be the backup between the pipes.

Craven and Mannix each was honorable mention All-District.

“Jake is very creative off the ball and with the ball,” Morris said. “He has great vision on the field.”

Morris paused.

“Overall, we’re going to have depth, and that’s always a good thing,” the coach said.
