Shenandoah faces Cameron, looks to stay unbeaten

TOM PERRY The Marietta Times Belpre’s Jesse Collins (82) runs with the ball during a high school football game against Wahama last Friday at Ralph Holder Stadium.

SARAHSVILLE — A pair of unbeatens will do battle Friday night when the (3-0) Cameron Dragons travel to Shenandoah to take on the (4-0) Zeps.

Shenandoah has used a very balanced attack to grab dominating wins over Frontier (51-6), River (44-12), Southern (Salineville) (28-0) and Barnesville (42-0).

The Zeps defense is allowing less than five points per contest while their offense is hitting on all cylinders led by senior running back Nick Miller.

Miller has piled up 825 rushing yards and an incredible 13 touchdowns in the first four games while he has also caught eight passes for 99 more yards and three touchdowns.

Quarterback Boone Jones has completed 28-of-47 pass attempts for 442 yards and five touchdowns with Kendal Sherman and Hunter Graham accounting for the other two receiving scores for the Jesse Wells-coached Zepplins.

Cameron opened their season with wins over Hundred (62-22) and Valley (28-0) before downing Frontier (56-10) last week.

The two non-conference teams did not play one another in 2016.

WARREN (0-4) AT OAK GLEN (1-2)

NEW CUMBERLAND, W.Va. — Warren hopes the long trip to New Cumberland, West Virginia will be the remedy as they try to capture that elusive first win of the 2017 campaign.

The Warriors early season schedule has been nothing short of brutal as they have played four teams with identical 3-1 records.

After falling to the likes of Athens (47-70), Marietta (50-16) and Point Pleasant (54-7), the Warriors were shellacked 50-6 last week by Fort Frye in a game that saw the Cadets score 50 points in the first half.

Ronnie Hill’s 61-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to Tyler Schafer prevented the Warriors from being shut out.

Oak Glen owns an overtime victory over Buckeye Local (28-21) while suffering losses to Weir (52-0) and Catholic Central (63-28).

Warren shutout Oak Glen 28-0 last season in Vincent.

BELPRE (2-2) AT SOUTHERN (3-1)

RACINE — The Golden Eagles will look to keep the momentum in their favor after a couple of big wins the past few weeks over Federal Hocking (51-0) and Wahama (42-20).

A Belpre win would put the Eagles right in the middle of a very competitive Tri Valley Conference Hocking Division battle.

In last week’s win over Wahama, the Greg Adams-led Eagles got a huge game from sophomore quarterback Brandon Simoniette who completed 18-of-21 pass attempts for 201 yards and three touchdowns.

Simoniette connected twice with senior Bailey Sprague and once with Jesse Collins as Belpre scored 28 points in the middle two quarters to brake open a tight game.

Tojzae Reames led BHS in rushing with 67 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries while Isaac Tullius scored a pair of rushing touchdowns on just three carries.

The Tornadoes lost last week to Miller (22-0) for their first loss of the season after opening with wins against Notre Dame (41-6), Frontier (41-0) and Wahama (27-21).

Key players for Southern include quarterback Logan Drummer, running backs Riley Roush and Dylan Smith and receiver Austin Baker.

Last year in Belpre Southern downed the Eagles 34-18.

CALDWELL (1-3) AT SHADYSIDE (3-1)

SHADYSIDE — The Redskins will look to stop their skid at three as well when they travel to Shadyside to take on a solid Tiger squad.

The season started so well for head coach Grant Gaydos and his ‘Skins as they rolled to a 54-14 win over Fairfield Christian Academy but since then Caldwell has lost to Bellaire (35-6), Bishop Rosecrans (34-0) and conference rival Monroe Central (32-0).

Quarterback Drew Ivey has averaged over 100 yards per game for Caldwell as the junior has carried the ball 57 times for 411 yards and four touchdowns.

Dalton Wheeler has carried the ball 14 times for 84 yards while Cole Garvin has 97 yards on 26 touches.

Shadyside got off to a great start with dominating wins over Toronto (48-14) and Monroe Central (40-8) before scoring a thrilling, double-overtime win over Magnolia (14-13) in week three.

The Tigers lost for the first time last week in a shootout against Meadowbrook (48-41).

Shadyside quarterback Anthony Coggins completed 15-of-20 pass attempts against Meadowbrook for 291 yards and four touchdowns while receiver Austin Price hauled in five catches for 122 yards.

Running back Alex Krupa carried the ball 20 times for 119 yards.

Last season at the Noble County Fairgrounds the Tigers trounced Caldwell 41-19.

FORT FRYE (3-1) AT MONROE CENTRAL (1-3)

WOODSFIELD — After suffering their first regular season loss in nearly three years to Northridge (6-0) in week number two, the Eric Huck-led Cadets appear to be right back on track after wins over neighbors Waterford (23-19) and Warren (50-6).

Last week the Warriors proved to be no match at all for the Cadets as the Fort scored 50 points in the first half alone.

Fort Frye features a very balanced offensive attack led by sophomore back Tyler Fisher, who has ran for 429 yards and five touchdowns.

Evan Schob (54-234) and Tyler Bradford (36-197) have also been productive backs for the Cadets while junior quarterback Tate Engle has completed 27-of-48 pass attempts for 460 yards and four touchdowns.

The Cadets will not want to take the Seminoles lightly despite their 1-3 record as the ‘Noles three losses came against a trio of teams in Union Local (40-23), Shadyside (40-8) and River (41-25) that have a combined 10-2 record on the season.

Monroe Central broke into the win column last week with a 32-0 win over Caldwell to open Pioneer Valley Conference play.

Quarterback Ryan LaFollette has been solid in his first year behind center as the senior has ran the ball 84 times for 448 yards and six touchdowns while completing 22-of-45 pass attempts for 308 yards and three more scores.

Cooper Rush has hauled in five catches for 122 yards and a touchdown for the Jay Circosta-led ‘Noles.

Last year in Beverly, the Cadets rolled to a 48-20 win over the Seminoles.

CROOKSVILLE (1-3) AT MORGAN (1-3)

McCONNELSVILLE — Morgan got in the win column last week with a 61-34 win over West Muskingum and head coach Derek Bragg and his Raiders would like nothing more than to make it two in a row when they host Crooksville Friday night.

The Raiders rolled up 355 rushing yards last week against West M including 205 on 21 carries by Wes Pauley.

Griffin Burkhart (9-72) and Jabin Treadway (4-56) had success on the ground as well while senior Ethan Newton set a pair of school records.

Newton’s 104-yard interception return for a touchdown put him in the Raider record books as did his seven extra points in one game.

The Ceramics opened their season with a 38-28 win over Fisher Catholic but have lost three-in-a-row to the likes of Philo (42-20), Maysville (28-21) and Tri-Valley (42-10).

Tri-Valley is the one common opponent the two Muskingum Valley League rivals have faced in the first four games as the Raiders were shutout 53-0 by the Scotties in week two.

Last season the Raiders bested the Ceramics 20-14 in week number eight at Crooksville.
