Marietta College softball swept by Denison, 11-1, 8-1

Denison University swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Marietta College Wednesday afternoon at Marietta Field.

The Big Red won game one, 11-1 in five innings, and 8-1 in game two.

Denison improves to 21-7 on the season, while the Pioneers fall to 15-19 overall.

The Big Red scored seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to break open game one. Denison scored two runs in the third and two more in the fourth before the big fifth inning rally.

Hannah Richardson (3-4) started in the circle for Marietta and took the loss. Richardson pitched 3 1-3 innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits with one walk and one strikeout. Jackie Mulvain allowed seven runs, six earned, on seven hits in one inning of work. Kara Stults threw 2-3 innings and had one strikeout.

Sarah Herold (10-3) allowed just two Pioneer hits and one run in five innings of work. She struck out seven and didn’t issue a walk.

Reagan Tom drove in Marietta’s lone run with a sac fly in the third inning. Ashley Tschudy led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. Kayla Alderson followed with a single moving Tschudy to third. Tom flew out to center field allowing Tschudy to tag and score.

In the second game Denison gradually built a lead. The Big Red scored two runs in the second, added one in the fifth, four in the sixth and another in the seventh.

Marietta’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to straight away center field off the bat of designated player Jordan Pallay. The seventh home run of her rookie season.

Maddi Liston (4-8) started and went five innings in the circle for the Pioneers. She gave up five runs, four earned, on six hits with one walk and one strikeout. Stults threw the final two innings and allowed three runs on four hits.

Colleen Hoffman (8-3) pitched the complete-game win for the Big Red. She gave up one run on just two hits. Hoffman walked two and struck out four.

Marietta wraps up the regular season on Saturday with a doubleheader at John Carroll. The first game is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
