Larry Hiser to coach Post 64 Legion baseball team
After a nearly 15-year hiatus, American Legion baseball returned to Marietta last summer as the Veterans of Post 64 agreed to sponsor both a junior and senior team.
Their support continues into the summer of 2018 as the teams are preparing for their second season.
Post Commander, Regis Kern, is leading the charge once again and assembled a group of community supporters to help organize the teams. Coaching the senior team this year will be Larry Hiser, athletic director at Marietta College. Hiser played college ball at Ohio Northern in the 80s and subsequently spent 20 years as a college assistant and head coach before coming to MC in 2008.
“I’m excited to return to the dugout,” said Hiser. “While I’ve been away from hands-on coaching for 10 years, I have been blessed to learn from the great coaches, especially coach (Brian) Brewer here at Marietta College. And from what I’ve seen of the local high schools so far, we should put together a pretty competitive squad this summer.”
Hiser will be assisted by Deron Alkire, a local prep star who played for two years Marietta College. Alkire also assisted with the Marietta Post 64 Junior Legion program last year and has been a fixture on the coaching staff of the Greater Marietta BSN Fall Baseball League for the last 12 years.
Coaching the junior team this year will be Jeff Martin and Rob Coil, who have been involved with the Marietta Sluggers youth program over the years.
Mark Duckworth is the scheduling coordinator and has put together 40-plus games for each team before the district tournaments begin in mid-July. Steve Hill will continue in his role of gameday administrator making sure things go smoothly at the ball field.
