Pios fall in OAC tourney opener

WESTERVILLE — Marietta College lost its opening game of the 2018 Ohio Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday afternoon at Fishbaugh Field on the campus of Otterbein University. Baldwin Wallace downed the Pioneers by the score of 19-5.

The loss dropped Marietta (26-15) into the losers bracket. The Pioneers will play Ohio Northern (27-14) at 12:30 p.m. today. Ohio Northern lost to Otterbein, 4-2, on a two-run walk-off home run by the Cardinals.

Baldwin Wallace (29-12) will play Otterbein (29-12) in the winners bracket at 9:30 a.m. today.

The Yellow Jackets jumped on Marietta starter David Stover for four runs in the first and seven more in the second inning. Stover (10-3) took the loss allowing 11 runs on 12 hits with a pair of strikeouts in 1 2-3 innings of work.

The Pioneers got solo home runs from Mike Hale in the eighth and Geoff Snyder in the ninth.

Snyder finished 4-for-5 to lead the Pioneer attack. Hale was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Evan Lovick (8-2) started and got the win for Baldwin Wallace. He worked five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits. Lovick walked three and struck out one. Jack Raines and Nick Patrone each threw two innings of relief. Patrone gave up the two Pioneer home runs.

If the Pioneers eliminate Ohio Northern today, they then would face the loser of the Baldwin Wallace-Otterbein game. The championship game is set for noon on Saturday.
