NASHPORT — Marietta High’s Tiger Navy will have a boat competing in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) Regatta on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J. May 25-26.

This past Sunday, the MHS girls varsity lightweight eight received an automatic bid to nationals when it earned a bronze medal at the Midwest Scholastic Rowing Association (MSRA) Regatta on Dillon Lake in Dillon State Park.

In that shell were Carli Robertson (bow), Reagan Loeber (2), Ashley Stewart (3), Marie Rauch (4), Grace Crosby (5), Sydney Westbrook 6), Ahni Georgerian (7), Marissa Smith (8, and Maddie Hawkins (cox).

“The varsity lightweight eight, rowing a strong 36-37 strokes per minute for most of the distance (1500 meters), raised the stroke rate to 40, and edged Rockford at the line,” said Marietta girls crew coach Joe Tewkesbury.

Also racing in Sunday’s Petite Final was the MHS girls varsity heavyweight eight, which finished a solid fifth “against very strong competition,” Tewkesbury said.

The heavyweight eight included Abbi Westbrook (bow), Laura Rauch (2), Cami Felix (3), Kya Lindsey (4), Riley Hearing (5), Lauryn Simpson (6), Kaitlyn Clovis (7), Lexi Dalrymple (8), and Seneca Craven (cox).

The two girls crews “put together their finest performances of the spring,” the coach added.

At the MSRA Regatta, there were 536 crews and 49 clubs, representing 49 schools from 12 states. Racing began with head race heats and semifinals early Saturday.

“Although thunderstorms and wind suspended racing for a time during the afternoon, the regatta resumed later on a truncated schedule until dark,” Tewkesbury said. “The adjustments due to weather ended the girls double scull’s chance to advance, but opened the door for the varsity heavyweight eight to race in Sunday’s Petite Final. The girls’ varsity lightweight eight had already been slotted into Sunday’s Grand Final.”
