Belpre’s Tojzae Reams compiles 112 yards, 2 TDs to earn BACF Ohio MVP honors

JOE ALBRIGHT The Marietta Times Belpre running back Tojzae Reams celebrates after a successful rush attempt during Friday’s Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis Football All-Star Classic at Bill Hanlin Stadium in St. Marys. Reams was named Ohio’s MVP.

ST. MARYS, W.Va. — Tojzae Reams can now add MVP to his already impressive sports resume.

The recent Belpre High grad and All-State hurdler earned the Ohio All-Stars top individual honor at Friday night’s 25th Annual BACF (Battle Against Cystic Fibrosis) Football Classic at Bill Hanlin Stadium at St. Marys High.

“It’s pretty sweet and a great feeling,” said the 5-foot-8, 160-pound Reams after the Ohio stars defeated the West Virginia stars, 47-13.

Point Pleasant High safety Aaron Turner was honored as West Virginia’s MVP in the silver edition of the BACF event.

Reams had an all-round game for the Ohio stars, rushing for 66 yards on five carries; making one reception for 46 yards; and returning a pick-6 for 45 yards.

“That was probably my favorite highlight,” said Reams of the interception and score in the third quarter. “They really thought they had the edge on me on that play.”

Reams also had a 14-yard run to paydirt in the second quarter, which gave Ohio a 28-13 advantages.

“He’s very deserving,” said Ohio stars assistant coach Kevin Welsh, who will be assistant head football coach Eric Huck at Fort Frye this upcoming fall.

“He played great on offense and defense. He’s a good team leader and a good kid — and he had a great game.”

Ohio quarterback Ryan LaFollette and wildcat/running back Nick Miller were also worthy MVP candidates for the winners.

LaFollette of Monroe Central completed 3 of 7 passes for 124 yards and one touchdown. He also gained 56 yards on 18 carries and scored one TD of 3 yards.

“He played real good,” Reams said.

“He did his thing. I actually got a nice reception off him.”

The 6-foot, 215-pound Miller rushed for a game-high 87 yards on 15 carries and two TDs of 5 and 15 yards.

“I loved playing with him (Miller),” Reams said. “He’s a real good running back. I hope he does something good (in college).”

As for Reams, he said he’s hoping to run track “at Akron or a D2 school” in the future.

While the 6-1, 210-pound Turner was listed as a defensive secondary player, he also got an opportunity to play tight end on offense and finished with two receptions for 28 yards and a touchdown.

Turner’s 19-yard catch of a Kam Mace throw in the second quarter got the West Virginia stars on the scoreboard.

“It’s crazy,” said Turner of the MVP award. “I’m just glad I got to play in this game. It’s been a blast throughout this whole week.”

In the first half, Turner was injured but was able to return to the action.

“I got stepped on and my ankle buckled underneath of me,” he said. “It’s all good, now.”
