Cadets back in action after cancellation last week

BEVERLY — After an unexpected week off the Fort Frye Cadets will look to pick up right where they left off when they open Pioneer Valley Conference play by hosting the winless Monroe Central Seminoles Friday night at Cadet Field.

The Cadets reeled off three consecutive wins to begin the season including a thrilling, come-from-behind 22-20 win in the season’s third week over arch-rival Waterford in a game that saw the Fort rally from a 14-point halftime deficit.

Fort Frye was the beneficiary of a forfeit last week when Federal Hocking was unable to field enough players to play the game.

In their victory over Waterford, junior Tyler Fisher’s 89-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes to go gave the Cadets the lead before Waterford answered with a last-minute touchdown of its own only to come up short on the two-point conversion attempt.

Fisher rushed for 179 yards on 11 carries against the Wildcats while sophomore Brian Adkins added 99 yards on 16 touches.

The Eric Huck-led Cadets are led by senior quarterback Tate Engle, who has won all but one of his 33 regular season starts as Fort Frye quarterback.

The Fort finds themselves in second place in the first Division IV, Region 23 computer rankings as they trail only Grandview Heights.

The 2018 season has not been kind at all to first-year head coach Josh Ischy and his Seminoles.

Monroe Central has lost their first four games by a combined score of 140-6 including last weeks PVC loss to Caldwell 26-0.

Freshman quarterback Malachi Rose-Burton rushed for 94 yards and passed for 88 against the Redskins.

Last season in Woodsfield, Fort Frye blanked the Seminoles 37-0.

WATERFORD (3-1) AT MILLER (1-3)

The Wildcats rebounded from their heart-breaking loss to Fort Frye in week number three by rolling to a 36-6 Tri-Valley Conference win over Reedsville-Eastern.

Friday night the Wildcats make the long trip to Corning with hopes of improving their conference mark to 3-0 with a win over the Miller Falcons.

Waterford has been led once again by a pair of seniors with plenty of experience in quarterback Peyten Stephens and running back Braden Bellville.

Against Eastern, Bellville carried the ball 14 times for 76 yards and three touchdowns while also hauling in a 20-yard touchdown pass from Stephens.

Stephens got off to a great start as the senior QB completed all five of his first-half pass attempts for 110 yards and two touchdowns.

Waterford owns wins over Sciotoville East (55-0) and South Gallia (41-6) and finds themselves ranked eighth in the first computer rankings of the season for Division VII, Region 27.

Miller should not be taken lightly despite its record as their three losses have come at the hand of three teams with a combined 9-3 record in Berne Union (26-0), Belpre (36-19) and Southern (58-13).

Last season the ‘Cats opened their season with a 35-25 win over the Falcons in Waterford.

FRONTIER (1-3) AT MAGNOLIA (2-2)

After a disappointing 40-14 loss at home last week to undefeated Cameron, the Russ Morris-coached Cougars will look to rebound Friday night when they travel to New Martinsville to take on Magnolia.

Since notching their first win of the season in week two over Beallsville (61-6), the Cougars have struggled in losses to a pair of West Virginia schools in Ritchie County (28-13) and Cameron.

Last week the Cougars did all of their offensive damage late when freshman quarterback J.D. Schmidt connected on a pair of 56-yard touchdown passes to Breckin Hoff and Kaylb McQueary in the games closing minutes.

Key players for the Cougars include quarterback Lane Snyder, running backs Joel Lewis and Eli Fickiesen and linebackers Logan Brookover and Noah Barnhart.

A win for Magnolia would put the Blue Eagles over the .500 mark at the halfway point of the season after scoring wins against Sherman (24-0) and River (22-8) while suffering losses to Williamstown (20-8) and Shadyside (50-20).

Key players to watch for Magnolia include quarterback Patrick Mirandy and running back Jason Beisel.

Last week against River, Beisel ran for 83 yards on 16 touches while Mirandy passed for 95 yards and ran for 161 more.

The two teams did not play one another in 2017.

UNION LOCAL (2-2) AT WARREN (0-4)

It’s been a tough start to the 2018 football campaign for first-year Warren head coach Dan Day and his Warriors.

Last week’s 38-8 loss on the road at Cambridge marked the fourth consecutive time that the Warriors have lost by at least 25 points.

Warren will look once again for their first win of the season when they host Union Local Friday night.

Last week against the Bobcats the Warren defense allowed 19 first quarter points before quarterback Kurt Taylor connected on a 27-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Simoniette late in the quarter to bring them to within 11.

Cambridge quickly answered with a pair of second quarter scores and never looked back.

In addition to the loss to Cambridge, the Warriors have also been defeated by the likes of quality opponents such as Athens, Marietta and Point Pleasant.

Union Local comes into the game looking to snap a two-game losing streak of their own.

After wins over Monroe Central (31-0) and Buckeye Local (30-16) to open the season the Jets have been defeated by Martins Ferry (39-7) and Harrison Central (28-7) the past two weeks.

The two teams did not meet in 2017.

SHADYSIDE (3-1) AT SHENANDOAH (2-2)

Shenandoah continues to trudge through a very tough football schedule in the first half of the 2018 season and would like nothing better than to score a victory Friday night over visiting Shadyside in what has the makings to be a good one in Sarahsville.

A win would put the Zeps over the .500 mark at the halfway point in the season after last week’s 12-0 shutout win over Barnesville evened their season mark.

Shenandoah’s defense was nothing short of brilliant against the Shamrocks as they limited them to just 155 yards of total offense.

An 11-yard scoring toss from senior quarterback Boone Jones to Kendal Sherman provided the Jesse Wells-coached Zepplins with their first score while a third quarter touchdown run by Ethan Wiley provided insurance in the win that snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Zeps other win came at the hands of Frontier (60-14) while they dropped a pair of tough ones to Bellaire (38-14) and Beaver Local (13-12)

Shadyside comes into the game fresh off of a 26-22 win over Meadowbrook for its third win in four tries.

A 42-yard pass from Anthony Coggins to Collin Holmes proved to be the game winner for the Tigers who also have wins over Monroe Central (55-0) and Magnolia (50-20) in their current three-game winning streak.

RIVER (1-3) AT CALDWELL (3-1)

The Caldwell Redskins are quietly putting together a pretty good 2018 campaign.

Third-year head coach Grant Gaydos and his ‘Skins are currently on a roll as a 26-0 Pioneer Valley Conference shutout on the road at Monroe Central left them winners of three games in a row.

A powerful Redskin running game was on display in Woodsfield as they piled up 474 rushing yards led by senior Drew Ivey, who carried the ball 20 times for 230 yards and a touchdown.

Sophomore Caden Moore had a breakout game as well for Caldwell as he rushed for 180 yards and a pair of key second-half touchdowns that broke open what was a close ballgame.

One year after making a great run in the postseason, the 2018 campaign has been a tough one so far for the Pilots as they have only a 28-7 win over Monroe Central to their credit while suffering losses to a trio of teams with a combined record of 10-2 in Bellaire (42-6), Southern (30-6) and Magnolia (22-8).

Key players to watch for River include quarterback Stone Thompson, running back Carter Dennis and receiver Michael Johnson.

The former PVC rivals did not meet in 2017.

MORGAN (1-3) AT CROOKSVILLE (0-4)

One week after snapping their three-game, season-opening losing streak with a dominating 48-13 win over West Muskingum, the Raiders have to like their chances at making it two-in-a-row when they travel to Crooksville to take on the winless Ceramics.

Senior Wesley Pauley led the way for Morgan by rushing for a school-record five touchdowns… all coming in the first half.

Pauley finished the game with 238 rushing yards on 18 carries while Cobey Hodge added 40 yards on 10 touches.

Quarterback Lucas Waters completed eight-of-12 pass attempts for 78 yards while Colton Young hauled in three receptions for 21 yards.

Crooksville comes into the Muskingum Valley league tilt in dire need of a win after dropping its first four games to four pretty good teams with a combined record of 12-3 between them in Fisher Catholic (28-7), Philo (47-0), Maysville (21-0) and Tri-Valley (49-0).

Last season in McConnelsville, the Ceramics trounced the Raiders 32-7.

PARKERSBURG CATHOLIC (4-0) AT GILMER COUNTY (1-2)

The beat goes on for second-year Parkersburg Catholic head coach Lance Binegar and his Crusaders after last weeks 38-8 win over Wirt County.

PC will look to make it five wins in a row Friday night when they travel to Glenville to take on Gilmer County.

The 2018 season has been a complete reversal for the Crusdaers after going winless in 2017 as they own wins over Paden City (47-14), much-improved Ritchie County (32-28) and South Harrison (36-21) in addition to Wirt County.

Last week against Wirt, Catholic scored 22 points in the second quarter and rolled from there led by Ty Sturm’s 232 rushing yards on 22 carries.

Jeb Boice had an outstanding game as well as he ran the ball 17 times for 61 yards while hauling in three Sturm passes for 46 yards and a touchdown.

Gilmer County’s lone win of the season came against the same Wirt County team in week number three (20-14).

Key players for Gilmer County include quarterback Ean Hamric, running back Joey Frame and receiver Isaac Poole.

CALHOUN COUNTY (1-3) AT ST. MARYS (0-3)

The Blue Devils find themselves in unfamiliar territory as they try for the fourth time to claim their first win of the 2018 campaign Friday night when they play host to Calhoun County.

St. Marys has been in every single game only to come up short against Scott (21-14), Roane County (28-17) and Ritchie County (24-21).

Anthony Wince was a bright spot for the Jodi Mote-led Devils last week as he hauled in a receiving touchdown and also returned a kick-off 90-yards for a touchdown.

Other key players to watch for St. Marys are receiver Lucas Lipscomb and lineman Isaac Snodgrass.

Calhoun County’s lone win of the season came against Wirt County (16-6) in its season opener before falling to the likes of Notre Dame (28-8), Doddridge County (48-0) and Tyler Consolidated (47-7).

Key players for the Red Devils are quarterback Adam Parsons, receiver Mason Bailey and running back Dalton McCune.

Last year St. Marys went on the road and demolished Calhoun County 61-8.
