Big second half powers Cadets past Barnesville

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Fort Frye’s Tate Engle (12) carries the ball during a high school football game against Barnesville Friday in Beverly. Fort Frye won, 42-20.

BEVERLY — Fort Frye had more big plays than Barnesville.

The Cadets exploded for 34 second-half points en route to a 42-20 come-from-behind triumph over the visiting Shamrocks in a homecoming football game Friday night.

“Tate (Engle) played well, and all the running backs played well,” said FFHS head coach Eric Huck. “(Tyler) Fisher had to have had a bunch of yardage. They all did. We just ran the ball really well, and that’s a big credit to our offensive line.”

Fort, No. 6 in OHSAA Division VI, Region 23 with a 6-0 record, was led by Tyler Fisher, who rushed for 194 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns of 1, 94, and 34 yards. He also had an interception.

Brian Adkins returned a punt 67 yards for a TD, and Evan Schob scored from five yards out. Quarterback Tate Engle hit Brady Schilling with a 42-yard TD strike. Schilling also had two picks.

Engle completed 4 of 11 throws for 125 yards and one TD.

Barnesville, which fell to 2-5, on the season was led by Cade Hannahs two touchdowns. He also rushed for 73 yards on nine carries.

Alex Meade also caught a 42-yard pass from QB Ayden Hannahs.

“Barnesville’s a good football team,” Huck said. “We knew it was going to be a battle. And I think we underestimated their speed a little bit.”

Cade Hannahs ran the opening kickoff back 90 yards to give Barnesville a 6-0 advantage. And, then after the Shamrock defense forced the Cadets to punt, the visitors stretched their lead to 14-0 when Hannahs broke one for 66 yards and a score at the 10:28 mark. That was followed by a two-point conversion run by Hannahs.

“We were definitely concerned,” Huck said. “It was two plays in a row, and it caught us a little off guard. We were a little shell-schocked to start off there.”

The Fort got eight of those points back late in the first quarter on Fisher’s one-yard run to paydirt and Engle’s two-point conversion. The touchdown was set up by a 41-yard punt return by Zane Greenleaf.

Early in the second quarter, Engle completed a 70-yard pass to Adkins, who was brought down on the five. But the Cadets ended up turning the ball over on downs when Engle was sacked for a huge loss by Meade.

Later in the period, Fort ended up having to turn the ball over on downs a second time.

“I thought we should’ve scored another time or two in the first half,” Huck said. “I mean, we were close twice and didn’t get in.”

At halftime, the Cadets trailed the Shamrocks, 14-8.

Fort received at the start of the second half, and got the ball on its own 6, no thanks to a penalty. But Fisher came to the rescue when he took a Engle handoff and bolted 94 yards to the house, knotting the score at 14-all.

“That helped get our confidence back,” Huck said.

Adkins then returned a Barnesville punt 67 yards for a TD to put the Cadets in the lead for the first time in the contest at the 10:28 mark. Schob’s two-point pass reception from Engle made it 33-14.

Then Schilling intercepted a pass, and Fort capitalized on the turnover when Fisher scored on a 34-yard TD run. David Kitts booted the extra point, and the Cadets led 29-14.

Late in the third, Ayden Hannahs hit Meade with a 42-yard scoring strike to reduce the defict to 29-20.

In the fourth quarter, Schilling caught a 42-yard TD pass, and Schob busted one for five yards and a 6-pointer to cap all the scoring in the contest.

“I’m really proud of the way we responded,” Huck said. “We ran the ball really well in the second half.

“That was a heckuva catch and run by Brady. He’s a good athlete, and we like getting the ball to him when we can.”
