Tigers claim ECOL crown
DEVOLA — The Marietta High boys soccer team defeated River View, 2-1, Wednesday night at Jerry Brock Field, the completion of a game started last Tuesday that was suspended due to weather.
The win, along with Coshocton’s 1-0 win over New Philadelphia, clinched Marietta’s third East Central Ohio League championship, and first since winning back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.
MHS also won 15 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League championships before joining the ECOL in 2011.
Marietta jumped out to a 2-0 lead, as Ryan Mannix knocked in a service from Ethan Feathers to give MHS a 1-0 lead with 5:16 to play in the first half. Feathers also played a role in the Tigers’ second goal, as he was taken down inside of the Black Bears’ box, and Sean Fournier converted the penalty kick to give Marietta a two-goal halftime lead.
River View cut the lead in half just five minutes into the second half, but the Tigers were able to hang on to clinch the ECOL crown.
For the game, Marietta outshot River View 11-6, with Justin LaBarre recording five saves in goal for the Tigers.
Marietta is now 7-4-1, and finishes 5-1 in the ECOL. The Tigers travel to Warren at 7 p.m. today.
