Schilling’s 19 helps Cadets top Wildcats

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Fort Frye’s Brady Schilling (2) attacks the basket as Waterford’s Holden Dailey (10) defends during a high school basketball game Tuesday at the Harry Cooper Annex.

WATERFORD — Fort Frye clicked while Waterford clunked — in the first half.

After the break, the Wildcats rallied and actually outpointed the Cadets by seven but ultimately dropped a 60-44 decision Tuesday night in non-conference boys’ basketball action at the Cooper Annex.

“They came out and did what they do,” said FFHS head coach Eric Henniger. “They play hard and they came back. In a rivalry game, a team isn’t going to give up whether they’re down 30 or one. We expected it. We handled that first rush, and came out with a win.”

Brady Schilling paced the Cadets (8-4) with a game-high 19 points. Kelton Fogle added 12, while Nic Hart had 10. Caden Fryman and Luke Nelson each chipped in with 6 markers.

Fort has now won eight of its last nine games.

“We’re playing well,” Henniger said. “The guys believe in each other and are playing well as a team.”

The Tom Simms-coached Wildcats (7-4) were led by Holden Dailey and Russell Young, who tallied 12 points apiece. Nick Fouss netted six markers.

Sparked by a couple of Nelson triples and two Hart deuces, Fort Frye staked itself to a 17-7 first-quarter advantage.

In the second period, Schilling scored six points and Fogle four as the Cadets stretched their lead to 32-9 at the intermission.

While Young had Waterford’s only bucket in the second stanza, the team itself was 1 of 13 from the field.

“At halftime, I told the guys what a great defensive effort we had there,” Henniger said. “But we couldn’t be satisfied, because we knew they (Wildcats) would make a run – and they did.”

Dailey, who went scoreless in the opening half, had the hot hand in the third quarter, scoring nine points as Waterford reduced the deficit to 11, 40-29. Young contributed five points, and Grant McCutcheon four during the surge.

Early in the final stanza, Dailey converted 1 of 2 from the foul line, and Peyten Stephens scored on a putback to cut it to single digits, 40-32.

But the Cadets were not to be denied as they stretched their advantage back into double digits, and won pretty much going away. Schilling led the charge, scoring eight fourth-quarter points.

Fort Frye is scheduled to play at Morgan at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, while Waterford is at Trimble in a TVC-Hocking Division tilt at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
