Tiger swimmers back in action Saturday in Zanesville

RON JOHNSTON The Marietta Times Marietta High’s John Barry Wharff competes in a high school swimming tri-meet earlier this season against Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South.

With the holiday layoff, Marietta High’s swim teams should be rearing to go and are expected to be energized for Saturday’s 11 a.m. Southeast Ohio Swim League South Meet at the Muskingum Recreation Center in Zanesville.

The Tigers have not competed in the pool since facing Parkersburg High and Parkersburg South in a local bragging rights tri-meet at the Parkersburg YMCA last month (Dec. 19).

John Glenn High will be hosting the SEOSL South event which will be featuring nine other schools.

The Walt Teer-coached Marietta girls’ and boys’ teams boast a combined 31 swimmers.

The MHS senior girls include Allison Hiser, Bailey Young, Caitlyn Corpman, and Maggie Gottfried, while the senior boys are Austin Offenberger, Nolann Salaun, and Alex Temesvary.

Look for Hiser to compete in the 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay; Young, in the 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke, and 400 freestyle relay; Corpman, in the 100 freestyle and 400 freestyle relay; and Gottfried, in the 200 IM, 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and 200 freestyle relay.

Offenberger is expected to swim the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay; Salaun, the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay; and Temesvary, the 200 IM, 100 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay.

The Marietta girls’ junior class includes Ashley Stewart, Reagan Loeber, Sam Zumwalde, Audrey Hearing, Holly Hill, and Reem Mohamed.

At the bragging rights meet in late December, Stewart was runner-up in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, and a swimmer on the second-place 200 medley and 200 free relay teams. Loeber also finished second in the 100 free, 100 backstroke and 200 medley relay, and 200 free relay.

This weekend, look for Zumwalde in the 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay; Hearing, in the 100 breaststroke, the 200 freestyle relay and 400 freestyle relay; Hill, in the 50 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and 100 breaststroke; and Mohamed, in the 100 freestyle.

There are eight junior boys on the Tiger roster — Jackson Macatol (200 medley relay, 200 IM, 200 freestyle relay, and 100 breaststroke), Javier Carrera (400 freestyle relay, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle), Oscar Hampton (400 freestyle relay, 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle), Garrett Herb (400 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay), Hayden Reed (200 freestyle relay), Johannes Schieble (50 freestyle), Nick Simon, and Jack Wesel,

While there are no sophomore girls on the Tiger team, there are three boys — Sam Gottried (200 medley relay, 50 freestyle, 500 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay), Carson Urban (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay), and John Barry Wharff (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, 400 freestyle relay, and 200 freestyle relay).

MHS has five frosh swimmers on the girls’ roster — Kayla Stewart (200 medley relay, 100 butterfly, 50 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay), Maya Benton (50 freestyle), Lauren Clark (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay), Paula Sibulo (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle), and Katryna Temesvary (50 freestyle, 100 freestyle, and 400 freestyle relay).

The Tiger freshman boys are Nathan Johnson (100 backstroke, 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay) and Owen Zundell (100 breaststroke, 200 medley relay, 500 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay).

After Saturday, the MHS swim teams aren’t scheduled to compete again until Jan. 19 at the River View Swim Invite. Then, the following Monday, Jan.21, the Tigers are slated to host the Martin Luther King Jr. invite at the Marietta Family YMCA.
