Warren’s Trent Sayre to run at Charleston

VINCENT — Trent Sayre will be donning the maroon and gold after prep graduation.

The Warren High senior cross country and track standout is scheduled to sign a National Letter of Intent at 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon in the Warriors gymnasium to continue his academic and running careers at the University of Charleston in Charleston, W.Va.

“Through running, I know that the University of Charleston can offer me a home away from home,” said Sayre, who is currently competing in the 152-pound weight class on the Jim Rhodes-coached Warren wrestling team.

Sayre is planning to major in radiological science at UC.

The University of Charleston is an NCAA Division II school and a member of the Mountain East Conference (MEC). The Golden Eagle harriers and thinclads are coached by Nick Bias.

In the spring, UC’s track and field teams’ home meets are at University of Charleston Stadium, formerly Laidley Field. The maroon and gold thinclads often compete against Marietta College.

An All-Ohio honoree in track, Sayre has helped set school relay records in the 4 by 400 (3 minutes, 25.19 seconds) and 4 by 800 (7:48.03 district and regional (7:56.85).

In the mile last spring, he stood on the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium podium in Columbus with a third-place time of 4:20:07. He was also a leg on the runner-up 4 by 8 team.

Sayre’s best time in the 800 has been 1:56.

Sayre was also a four-time Ohio Valley Athletic Conference (OVAC) champion in the 800, 4 by 8, and 4 by 4 last spring. In his sophomore season, he was crowned a champ in the 1600 (mile).

His prep track and field coach this spring will be Tyler Schaad.

During the fall, Sayre has excelled on the XC course and advanced to state three times in his sophomore, junior and senior campaigns.

In the OVAC Cross Country Meet-5A Division, he finished second in his sophomore and senior seasons, and third as a junior.

Sayre’s best time in the 5K distance has been 16:00.

His XC coach was Neil Brague. Sayre is the son of Chris and Jaymie Sayre and Kathi Hill and Ryan Milligan. His older brother Ronnie Hill quarterbacked the Warren football team.
