Fort Frye’s Huck to play in North-South Classic

Times file photo Fort Frye’s Brenden Huck (9) has been selected to play in Saturday’s North-South Classic all-star football game in Massillon.

Brenden Huck didn’t hesitate when he got the offer to play in the Ohio North-South Classic all-star football game.

“I said, ‘Heck yeah. Of course,'” the Fort Frye senior recalled. “It’s an amazing opportunity. I feel honored to be able to play in this game.”

The North-South Classic is played at Paul Brown Tiger Stadium in Massillon. It features some of the state’s best football players.

There will be two games — the Division IV-VII game, which Huck will play in, and the Division I-III game. The Division IV-VII game kicks off at noon followed by the Division I-II game at 4 p.m.

Huck was a late addition to the South team’s roster, and he’s enjoyed every second of the opportunity.

“It’s like nothing I’ve ever experienced,” said Huck, son of Fort Frye head coach Eric Huck. “It’s just fun, relaxed football. I really missed football and I’m glad to be playing again. It’s just an honor to be a part of it.”

Huck was a part of four straight Cadets teams to make the Division VI playoffs. He started both ways on this year’s regional champion team which made it all the way to the state semifinals before falling to eventual state champ Kirtland.

FFHS has a rich football tradition, especially recently. Yet, with all the talent that has come through, Huck is the first Cadet to ever be chosen for the North-South game.

“I was kind of astonished to hear I was the first one,” Huck said. “There’s been plenty of great players to come through Fort Frye. I hope more Fort Frye kids get a chance to play in the future.”

Huck played tight end on offense for the Cadets but really stood out on defense as a linebacker, which is where he expects to play Saturday.

“In the North-South game, you have to run a 4-3 cover zero man defense,” Huck explained. “So I’ll basically be covering the tight end. I’m also playing on the kickoff team.”

Huck always had a nose for the ball during his prep career. He racked up 63 tackles, four sacks, seven pass deflections, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and two interceptions during his senior campaign.

The North-South game won’t be Huck’s final time putting on the pads as he’s committed to playing collegiality for Muskingum University. He said he’s impressed with the direction of the program and the coaches “had an energy about them.” He plans to major in education.

Also from the area, Shenandoah’s Boone Jones and Chase Chicwak will be playing, while Zeps head coach Jesse Wells will be an assistant.

“I’m pretty pumped,” Huck said. “I just feel really blessed and honored.”
