Man fatally shot by police trying to serve order at his home
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (AP) — Authorities say a police officer fatally shot an 80-year-old man while trying to serve a domestic violence protective order at his home in West Virginia.
News outlets report Robert Matz was killed Monday morning when Clarksburg police attempted to serve the order. Police Chief Robbie Hilliard says Matz was armed when two officers and one probationary officer arrived at his home. He did not say what prompted the shooting.
Harrison County Sheriff Robert Matheny says the police department asked his office to investigate. Sheriff’s detective Lt. Rob Waybright declined to identify the three officers but said investigators believe that only one of them fired.
Waybright says investigators will review police body camera footage.
The sheriff’s office will report the findings to the county prosecutor and the police department.
