Having fun for Hervida

5K run/walk will be held in Oak Grove

Photo submitted by Oak Grove Explorers 4-H Club Runners from around the region will descend on Oak Grove Saturday for the 5K Run/Walk for Hervida.

This weekend, dozens of runners will be heading for Oak Grove to participate in the 5K Run/Walk for Hervida.

Registration will be held from 7 to 7:45 a.m. Saturday at the Oak Grove Christian School. The race begins at 8 a.m. The cost is $15 per person.

Organized by the Oak Grove Explorers 4-H Club, the run/walk is in its ninth year, said Andrea Ralston, 4-H advisor.

The event will benefit the Hervida 4-H Camp near Waterford and will attract “anywhere from 60 to 100” athletes, Ralston said.

The route will begin on B.F. Goodrich Road at the corner of Oak Grove Lane and finish on Oak Grove Lane at the community center.

Used primarily by the 4-H, Camp Hervida is rented out on the weekends and is used for outdoor education camps for local schools in the spring.

“It’s rented out for family reunions and things like that,” Ralston added.

Proceeds from the run/walk will help fund supplies and equipment needed at the camp.

“We just bought new plastic cups and dishes, and a water cooler,” she noted. “In the past we bought a new water fountain, a mini-fridge for the nurse’s cabin and a portable sound system.”

Other items purchased from proceeds include new mattress covers and new ceiling fans for the craft hall.

“We also put money into the endowment at Ohio State University for Camp Hervida and into the Marietta Community Foundation for Camp Hervida in the past,” Ralston said of the more than 90-year-old club. “The first couple of years we put all the money into Ohio State, but they made what they needed and now we want to keep the money local.”

As the event is sponsored by the Oak Grove Explorers 4-H Club, members will be working the event as course monitors. The run/walk is just one of the activities the club members participate in.

“They have 4-H projects from cooking and sewing, to photography to livestock,” Ralston said. “They do a lot of community service like spreading mulch at the Oak Grove Recreation Center playground.”
