Those in Washington County will have a multitude of events to choose from this weekend to show moms how much they care.
From brunches and dinners to flea markets and motorcycle rides, this weekend will offer many tastes and activities for everyone’s mother to enjoy.
Sweetapple Farm at 149 Sweetapple Road, Vincent, will be holding its annual Mother’s Day animal baby shower. On Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors will be able to partake in a variety of farm fresh foods as well as have a lot of fun. There will be a petting zoo, $4 hayrides, a garden word find and nursery rhyme garden and plenty of baby animals to interact with. Admission is free, but Sweetapple requests donations of diapers in sizes four, five and six. The diapers will be donated to the Western Washington County Food Pantry.
For those families who might want to take to the water, there are special Mother’s Day cruises on the Valley Gem to consider.
“Treat your mother to something they don’t get to do very often,” said Heather Sands, general manager.
On Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m., the Valley Gem will cruise the Muskingum and Ohio rivers, giving moms a scenic view of the waterways that help make Marietta special. Participants will be given a meal of prime rib and pork tenderloin with a variety of sides as they pass under bridges and share the river with barges and other nautical traffic.
For those who don’t have sea legs, the Riviera will also be offering the same food during a brunch from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at their restaurant securely fastened to the dock at 601 Front St. Lunch and dinner cruises are $40 per adult, $38 per senior and $32 per child. The brunch is $24 per adult, $22 per senior and $12 per child. People interested should call 740-373-7862 to reserve their spot.
The Morgan County Fair will be holding its Mother’s Day Flea Market all Mother’s Day weekend long for those moms that like to find rusty gold mixed in with crafts, food and fun. The flea market opens at 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday at the Morgan County Fairgrounds, with tractor pulls, a demolition derby and a beauty pageant sprinkled in to keep everyone in the family entertained . For a complete schedule of events, visit Morgan County Fair’s Facebook page.
Some moms prefer prefer adventure to a brunch in their honor. The Marietta VFW is offering its yearly Mother’s Day poker run for the mothers who use adrenaline to fuel their maternal instincts.
“It will go about 100 miles with at least four stops,” said Ken Blume, trustee at the VFW.
He said the event is about meeting new people and enjoying the fellowship with other bikers. At the end of the run, Blume said his and her Kimber pistols will also be raffled off.
The cost is $10 per rider, $15 if there are two people on a single bike. Tickets can be purchased at the start of the ride on Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Marietta VFW at 319 Pike St.
As a special treat for mothers, those moms touring the Children’s Toy and Doll Museum at 206 Gilman Ave. this weekend will be given a rose. Tours are $4 for adults and $2 for children. New exhibits this season include an area devoted to unique and varied wind-up toys.
Meanwhile, other flowers can be found just across the river.
The Williamstown Area Kiwanis will have its annual Mother’s Day Flower Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at Tomlinson Park. A variety of hanging baskets and potted flowers will be available. All proceeds benefit the Williamstown Area Kiwanis.
