Founded in 1991, the orchestra is composed of some of Russia’s finest young string players. It has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky. About half of almost 2,000 concerts the orchestra has performed to date have taken place in Moscow. The rest were played on tours in 24 countries in Europe, North and South America and the Far East.

The orchestra’s discography of more than 30 albums has received widespread international acclaim, such as the Diapason d’Or award in France, Critics Choice in London’s Gramophone, Critics Choice in The New York Times and Record of the Year award in Hong Kong. Of about 1,000 compositions in the orchestra’s repertoire, more than 20 were written especially for the orchestra by composers from Russia, Europe and the U.S.

After the start of the new year, the Abba tribute band ABBA Mania will be making its second visit in two years to the Smoot State. The show will be Jan. 25, 2018, almost exactly two years after its first appearance at the Smoot.

On March 5, 2018, the Smoot will present the American Boychoir.

The American Boychoir has long been recognized as one of the finest musical ensembles in the country. Under the leadership of Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, Litton-Lodal Music Director, the American Boychoir has dazzled audiences with its unique blend of musical sophistication, spirited presentation and ensemble virtuosity.

The Smoot’s Performing Arts Series for 2017-2018 will end on April 27, 2018, with another performance by frequent Smoot visitor Jim Witter.

Over the years, Witter, an accomplished singer and pianist, has highlighted the words and music of many different renowned performers during his Smoot performances. The 2018 show will be “You’ve Got a Friend: Celebrating the Music of James Taylor, Carole King and More.” Songs will include classics such as “Fire and Rain,” “How Sweet it Is,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and more.
