Hometown Holiday Spectacular Friday

ERIN O’NEILL The Marietta Times Steve Brown, right, director of the Marietta Ukelele Choir, leads the group of around 60 members in a Christmas tune on Tuesday during rehearsals for the second annual Hometown Holiday Spectacular.

The sounds of the season were full and bright on the stage of the Peoples Bank Theatre Tuesday as members of various musical acts took the stage to rehearse for an upcoming show.

The second annual Hometown Holiday Spectacular will take place on Friday beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the door, online or by calling the box office.

“We have been rehearsing since October for this event and we’ve been a group since January,” said Steve Brown, elementary music teacher for Marietta City Schools and director of the Marietta Ukelele Choir. “We practice every Tuesday at Christ United Methodist Church and we have about 62 members.”

Some members have experience playing while others are totally new to it, Brown explained. The group, which includes young and older participants, is always accepting new members and can be contacted through Facebook.

Elizabeth Thacker, director of choirs at Marietta High School, has

coordinated this Peoples Bank Theatre event for the past two years to showcase some of her students and the talents of others, and as a way to give back to the community. The event will feature Stacey’s Dance Studio, PACE Dance Studio, High Schools That Rock, MHS Cantabile, MHS Vocal Point, MMS Choirs, Marietta Ukulele Choir, MHS Band ensembles and Marietta Marquettes.

“We have a good variety of performers and a lot of good entertainment. It just reminds me of an old-fashioned community Christmas event,” Thacker said.

The event was changed this year to be on Friday instead of Sunday and will have one general admission ticket price in an effort to pack the house. Marietta Choir Boosters will receive a donation as the organizers of the event and Thacker said it will go into the general fund for the choirs.

“It’s exciting as we’re into our second holiday season here at the theater,” said Drew Tanner, marketing director for the Peoples Bank Theatre. “We host national and touring acts but we have a long history of school groups performing (at the theater) and it’s great to be able to host these local ensembles as well, to give the kids a chance to be on the stage and make great memories.”

Friday will also mark the First Fridays event in downtown Marietta, sponsored by Marietta Main Street. The theme is Moonlight Madness and participating shops will stay open later to accommodate holiday shoppers. There will be carolers, hot chocolate stations and much more.
