BELPRE — A Belpre Police officer alerted the occupants of a Middle Street home to a fire Wednesday morning, and everyone was able to get out safely.

The fire in an attached garage that also housed an indoor pool was reported around 5:05 a.m. Wednesday, Belpre Volunteer Fire Department Chief Tony Cronin said. The occupants of the home and their dog were able to escape without injury after Belpre Police Sgt. Tyler Heddleston woke them by knocking on the door, he said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is not believed to be suspicious, Cronin said.

Firefighters had been on the scene for about five minutes when flames began coming through the roof, which soon collapsed, the chief said.

“It had been burning for a while. It got ahead of us,” he said.

After exiting the house, Tom Logston and his wife watched firefighters battle the blaze from their vehicle.

“The fire department got here pretty quick,” Logston said. “They finally got it stopped before it got into the main house.”

Cronin said it took about 40 minutes to get the fire under control.

The Little Hocking and Blennerhassett volunteer fire departments also responded to the scene.
