WILLIAMSTOWN — The homestretch is upon the Mid-Ohio Valley with the full return of Relay for Life next week.

But to get a jump start on the buildup fundraising events before Aug. 6, two young entrepreneurs took to the street this week with a high-profit margin to contribute their share.

“We made $90 in just two hours,” counted Avery, Lafleur, 10, of Richmond, Va., as she sat next to her cousin Alyssa Borkowski on Columbia Avenue in Williamstown Monday.

“We’ll be selling all week, probably around lunch,” shared Borkowski, 11, of Williamstown.

Both have a personal connection to the cause, their grandmother Teresa Scott, has survived cancer.

“We probably all know someone, and we want to do our part,” said Borkowski.

Steve Bodnar, 68, of Williamstown, was impressed with their commitment this week, especially with high temperatures.

“But that’s smart business, ingenious really,” he said as they nestled into the shade of a roadside shrub with an umbrella and free refills.

The pair also plan to run their lemonade stand at Tomlinson Park during the relay event, which starts at 6 p.m. Aug. 6.

“And we’ll be selling luminaries all the way up until the ceremony,” added Scott, who’s a younger addition to the jovial “bag ladies” that run the honorarium activity lining the walk.

And for those who can’t relay, but want to contribute?

“There are things going on all the way up until the relay,” Scott said. “A spaghetti dinner on Sunday, a purse auction, country store and raffles. This small town always comes out to support.”

The spaghetti dinner is scheduled for Sunday between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. at the Burnt Hill United Methodist Church fellowship hall with $5 donations.

Then on Aug. 6, the purse and pie auction begins at 7 p.m.
