Marching to the beat of a different drum: Marietta’s Constance Warner follows her own path with interests in music, technology
The Teen of the Week is Constance Warner, 17, a senior at Marietta High School with a deep involvement in music and technology.
Warner leads the tech team at her high school, managing everything from lighting and sound to video editing and photography for events. She’s also a dedicated member of Business Professionals of America (BPA), where she competes in events like graphic design and podcasting.
“I’m in charge of all the tech stuff at the high school,” she explained, “and I compete in graphic design and media through BPA.”
Warner’s journey into media production began almost by chance.
“I was sitting backstage playing guitar with my friends and watching the tech classes,” she said. “I asked the teacher if he could show me how to do some of that stuff, and he said, ‘If you join the class.'”
That was the start of her involvement in high school media production and tech courses, where she now studies audio engineering and stagecraft for theater.
Music has been a major focus for Warner since she began playing guitar at 13. She’s since added piano, drums, and other percussion instruments to her skill set, and she performs as a percussionist with the Marietta College Community Band.
Warner plans to study guitar performance in college, hoping to join a band in the future. She’s currently applying to music programs at top schools like Musicians Institute, CalArts, and Berklee.
“Ideally, I’d like to be in a band,” Warner said. “But I know there are other things I can do with guitar performance.”
Warner has balanced her passions with academics, earning an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts by the end of her sophomore year through Washington State College of Ohio’s College Credit Plus program. She has a 4.0 unweighted GPA, and she’s in the running for valedictorian.
“I was taking as many classes as I wanted, just to study more things,” she said, reflecting on her academic journey.
Her school recently introduced weighted GPAs, making her achievements all the more noteworthy.
In addition to her community band, Warner also performs with her father’s band and at the First Presbyterian Church in Marietta. When asked what she loves most about music, she described the feeling of performing.
“It’s just an entirely different feeling,” she said. “Like, when you’re on stage, it just feels good to be there.”
