VOLCANO — The memorial honoring submariners lost during World War II was removed from Mountwood Park last week so it can be cleaned and repainted.
Pifer’s Towing and Recovery brought in a small crane Friday and lifted the torpedo memorial off of its stand and loaded it on a trailer. It was taken to Federal Industrial Services along U.S. 50 where it will be sandblasted, cleaned and repainted, Wood County Parks Director Jeremy Cross said. The businesses involved are donating their time and services.
Once the work is completed the torpedo will be placed back on its stand.
“Mountwood Park is grateful to have so many members of the community coming together to make this project a success,” Cross said. “The torpedo has needed painted for several years and soon, the public will be able to visit the park to see the finished product.
“This is definitely something everyone can be proud of at Mountwood Park, and we thank everyone involved in making it happen.”

The memorial is near the lakefront along the first road on the right after entering the park.
Cross was not sure how much a job like this would cost if they would pay for it. He also did not know how long the work would take.
“We want them to take their time and make sure it looks excellent,” he said.
The memorial honors the service of all the submariners who served in World War II, but particularly the crew of the USS Cisco SS 290, whose 76 officers and men were killed on September 28, 1943, in an anti-submarine attack by enemy ships and aircraft. The memorial also lists all 52 submarines lost during World War II, noting the vessels, the 374 officers and 3,131 men aboard are “Still on Patrol.”
