Patrol investigating fatal wreck in Athens County

ATHENS — The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle accident Friday afternoon in Athens County that left one person dead.

Troopers from the Athens Post responded to Ohio 691 for an accident involving a motorcycle.

A 2023 Honda CR-V operated by Julie L. Howard, 49, Nelsonville, traveling north on Ohio 691 just west of Salem Road attempted to turn left into a private drive, the patrol said. A 2001 Harley-Davidson motorcycle operated by Clem J. Mace, 65, also of Nelsonville, traveling south on Route 691 struck the Honda and then overturned, the patrol said.

Howard was treated on scene by Athens County EMS. Mace was taken to Marietta Memorial Hospital in Athens by Athens County EMS where he was pronounced dead by the Athens County Coroner’s Office.

The accident, which remains under investigation, happened shortly before 2 p.m. The patrol was assisted by Athens County EMS, the York Township Fire Department, Athens County Coroner’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Riverside Towing and Doc’s Towing.
