Christmas show slated by Smoot children performers

PARKERSBURG — The Smoot Theatre youth vocal ensembles will present a Christmas Concert at 3 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Episcopal Church on Juliana Street.
The performers are from the Smoot Theatre Children’s Chorus, the Smoot Theatre Boys Ensemble and the Smoot Theatre Girls Ensemble. The groups have been in existence for 16, 14 and 11 years, respectively.
The Children’s Chorus will begin with its traditional processional “Jubilate Deo” from the 17th century and will continue with seasonal favorites and multi-cultural selections of the Spanish carol “A La Media Noche,” the spiritual “Children, Go Where I Send Thee,” the contemporary arrangements of “It’s So Still in Bethlehem” and “Nutcracker Jingles” and the 16th century “Gaudete” featuring soloists Katie Henrichsen, Olivia Collins, Ashtyn Newberry, Lyra Sams, Anna Offenberger and Rose Casto.
The Girls Ensemble will begin with Michael Praetorious’ “Sing Dem Herrn” and perform the Appalachian carol “Jesus, Jesus, Rest Your Head,” the Spanish “Fum, Fum, Fum,” the contemporary “O Nata Lux” by Victor Johnson, “Do You Hear What I Hear?” and “Hear the Sleigh Bells Ring!”
The Boys Ensemble will present a variety of seasonal favorites, including “We Three Kings” in a new arrangement by Noah Reese, “Star of Wonder” by Greg Gilpin, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” arranged by Vicki Tucker Courtney and “A Season of Goodwill” featuring soloists Grant Henrichsen, Landon Collins and violinist Anita Henrichsen. Featured accompanists include Scott Kitchen and Ford Schwendeman on percussion and Felice Jorgeson on piano.
The Fifth Street Boys, a select quartet from the Smoot Theatre Boys, will entertain the audience as it searches for the perfect Christmas gift for their favorite girl.
In the final section, the choirs will combine to sing “Here We Come A-Caroling,” a medley of well-known carols, and will end the program with “Peace, Peace” with the audience joining in the singing of “Silent Night”.
The Smoot Theatre’s Children’s Chorus is an auditioned choir of fourth, fifth and sixth graders from the Mid-Ohio Valley who meet for weekly rehearsals and music instruction by the staff, Director Barbara Full, accompanist Marsha Parsons and Jorgeson, who is the Smoot artistic director.
The Smoot Theatre’s Boy Ensemble is boys in grades seven and above and is directed by Janet Blessing. The Smoot Theatre’s Girls is girls in grades seven and above and is directed by Catherine Martin with accompanist is Jane Irvine.
While the concert is free, donations will be accepted. Trinity Episcopal Church at 430 Juliana St. is handicap accessible and has ample parking available.
