Mid-Ohio Valley Ballet Company show tonight at MHS

From staff reports

The Mid-Ohio Valley Ballet Company will present a new and original ballet as its spring production for 2014.

Entitled “The Kitty Kapurrs,” the performance will be 7:30 p.m. today in the Marietta High School auditorium.

Reserved seat tickets are $15 for adults and $6 for children under 18 by calling (304) 422-5538. Tickets are available from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today at the MOVB office at 1311 Ann St. in Parkersburg. In Marietta, tickets are available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and Friday at Barking Dog Books and Art at 212 Putnam St.

Tickets will also be available at the door. From every adult ticket sold, $3 will be donated to the Save-A-Kitty Foundation.

The ballet is based on storybooks written by Martin School’s second-grade class of 2013. The stories were developed by the children after they looked through hundreds of pictures provided by Save-A-Kitty founder Kandy Habeb. The children used their imaginations to create stories based on the pictures.

Choreographed by MOVB artistic director Suzy Gunter, the ballet opens with the school children preparing for their writing assignment. They learn about the Save-A-Kitty Foundation and how it helps save stray and feral cats. The stories come to life as the children “write” them in their notebooks.

“The lazy cat, the bad cat, the playful cat, the cat who loves food and the scared cat all dance their way across the stage,” Gunter said, adding the show then follows several stories in more detail.

“The Animal Club” is the story of a cat who has lost her way home and other stray animals befriend her, including a horse, an iguana, a black and white kitten, a deer and an albino squirrel. “The Magic Cat” is about a cat who changes itself into other animals if it is scared or being chased. “The Fairies in the Woods” tells of a homeless cat saved by magic fairies.

The cast will feature Gunter, Jolene Craig, Chelsea Cobranchi, Gabrielle Kelley, Rebecca Segrest, Haley Stephens, Jaymee Ferrebee, Jessica Gainer and Michael Dillon, along with Casey Hall, Keysy Lindsey, Troya Browning, Anna Fatta, Annie Woofter, Elizabeth Sexton, Kristin Carsner, Emily Taylor and Cassie Williams.

They will be joined by an additional 40 students from the MOVB Academy of Fine Arts who will perform the roles of the school children and the magic fairies.

MOVB is funded in part by Artsbridge and the United Art Fund of Wood and Washington counties.
