Mangia! Pasta for a cause
MOV’n Dragons & The Right Path both holding fundraisers
There will be two options for lovers of Italian food this weekend that will not only fill their stomachs, but help worthy causes in the area. The MOV’n Dragons and the Right Path for Washington County will be having spaghetti dinner fundraisers to help fund their philanthropic activities.
From 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Saturday in the First Congregational Church at 318 Front St., the MOV’n Dragons will hold their eighth annual pasta dinner and silent auction. Judy Baker, a member of the group, said the organization uses the funds to help people recovering from a battle with cancer to get back into shape.
The group uses dragon boat racing, a human powered watercraft originating from China that uses paddles instead of standard oars, to help people who have gone through cancer treatments get their strength back. She also said they sponsor other exercise programs around the area.
“It’s called the “Thriver Program,’” she said. “It helps pay for physical fitness activities for cancer survivors.”
Baker said the pasta dinner and silent auction enables people to enjoy a great meal and have a good time for a worthy cause.
“There will be salad, bread and desserts including cookies and brownies,” she said.
But Baker said the signature food for the event is the sauce.
“We will have a meat and a vegetarian sauce,” she said.
Janet Chase, also a member of MOV’n Dragons, is preparing the unique meatless sauce.
“It has mushrooms, black olives and marinated artichokes in it,” she said.
She also said there is one extra ingredient in the sauce that really gives it unique flavor and texture.
“It’s fennel seeds,” she said. “There’s going to be a rush on them in the stores now.”
There will also be a silent auction at the event, where people can bid on necklaces from Jewelry by Design, a kayak rental from the Marietta Adventure Company, a large pizza from Over the Moon Pizza and Pub and boxes of chocolate from Putnam Chocolates, to name a few.
Tickets are $8 in advance, $12 at the door and $4 for children 5 and under. To purchase tickets in advance or for more information call 740-706-4600.
From 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Spagna’s at 301 Gilman Ave., the Right Path for Washington County will be holding its ninth annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser.
For $12, attendees can have all-you-can-eat spaghetti, salad, bread and a beverage. Cathy Harper, coordinator for the Right Path, said people that come will be treated to a fabulous evening.
“It’s the greatest event ever,” she said. “It’s because it’s Spagna’s.”
Harper said the spaghetti will have sauce and meatballs made by Spagna’s owner, Kevin Whitby.
“It’s a secret family recipe,” she said.
Harper said the money collected will go toward funding their promotion of healthy youth development. She said families enrolled in programs with her organization will be able to use local pools this summer as a family, during swim nights.
“It’s usually from 6 to 8 p.m. on Fridays,” she said. “And we rotate them around different pools in the county.”
She said there will be a new twist to this year’s pool party at the Marietta Aquatic Center.
“Children will get vouchers for a mini-market,” she said.
The market will be in the grassy area near the pool and provide healthy alternatives like fruits and vegetables for the children to purchase with the vouchers.
“The kids are really excited about it,” she said.
