Police investigate suspicious device found in Williamstown

From staff reports

WILLIAMSTOWN – A suspicious device was found in Williamstown on Sunday afternoon that resulted in a bomb disposal unit being brought in.

Williamstown Police Chief Shawn Graham said a resident along the 1000 block of Highland Avenue called in to police about a device that resembled a pipe bomb they had found.

Williamstown Police responded, made observations about the device and then contacted members of the bomb disposal unit of the West Virginia State Police, who responded from Moundsville, he said.

The unit was able to disassemble the device without incident to secure potential evidence. That evidence is being sent to the state lab this week.

“Hopefully we can gain more information to go on,” Graham said.

The Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department also assisted on the incident.

The investigation into this is continuing, Graham said.
