Bra fundraiser to help shelter, homeless women

Using humor and art to shed light on a sensitive and often forgotten women’s health issue, the local Zonta women’s club is launching a new fundraiser.

“It’s very tongue in cheek, classy, but funny,” said Desni Crock, current president of the Zonta Club of the Mid-Ohio Valley, as she explained the new fundraiser: Delicates with Dignity. “People are decorating bras and we’ll have the public vote on what they think was most creative using their dollars.”

Those funds gathered at local downtown businesses, via business sponsorships and at both the October First Fridays event at the Adelphia and at the subsequent luncheon on Oct. 5, will then go to purchase women’s delicates and feminine hygiene products.

Those undergarments and products will then be donated to not only the EVE, Inc. domestic violence shelter but also local food pantries.

Homeless women and those experiencing domestic violence otherwise might not have access to hygienic undergarments and products while living in transition.

“I think it’s an important issue but one we don’t really talk about,” said Trisha Miller, 41, of Devola. “Desni and I have known each other for a long time, and when she told me about this and what it was for, of course, I wanted to participate.”

Miller said she already had the paint on hand to design her bra entry.

“I was teaching painting last year in the third week of the month, now I’m painting a K-Mart bra in the third week of the month,” she laughed. “I’m doing an homage to Van Gogh because I love him and ‘Starry Night.'”

Crock said the Zonta club is also gathering sponsorships ranging from $50 to $500 for the upcoming display of the artists’ works.

“We want to get those sponsors finalized this week so that we can maximize their advertising visibility before our luncheon,” Crock explained. “So all bras and sponsorships are due to me by Friday.”
