Wolf Creek BOE talk repairs

WATERFORD — Waterford Elementary School and Waterford High School are to get substantial repair work next year.

The Wolf Creek Local Schools board of education on Monday night set a special meeting for 5 p.m. Dec. 16 to review the plans.

“I would say it’s a lot of work,” superintendent Doug Baldwin said. “We wanted a special meeting to consider just this topic.”

Baldwin said the work will include HVAC systems for both the district’s buildings, replacement of numerous windows, and building a natural gas connection for the elementary school.

“This will be to approve the work going out to bid?” board president Hugh Arnold asked.

“Yes, we want to do that in early January,” Baldwin said. “Any questions you have, get them to me.”

In a related action, the board approved a request from treasurer Rachel Miller to move $4 million from the district’s Permanent Improvement Fund to its general fund in anticipation of the projects.

In other business, the board approved hiring Caitlin Jackson as a part-time cook at the elementary school, Jeanie Hendershot as a substitute custodian and Cierra Richter as a substitute educational aide.

“The sub numbers are coming up,” Baldwin said. “We were struggling for a while but now we have a decent number of people.”

Miller noted in the treasurer’s report that the district’s credit card account had been compromised.

“It was caught early, and all the charges were reversed. They’ve issued us a new card,” Miller said.

The board will hold its annual organizational meeting at 6 p.m. Jan. 13, with extra time set aside for interviewing applicants for the board position being left vacant by the departure of board member Stephen Lang. No approved petitions were received in the Nov. 5 election for Lang’s unexpired term, so the seat will be filled by an applicant from the community, to be approved by the board. Lang began his service the same way in January 2018, being selected from several people who expressed interest in filling the the seat left vacant when Cheryl McCutcheon retired and nobody ran for the position.

Arnold was chosen president pro-tem pending the organizational meeting.

The board’s regular monthly business meeting will be held after the organizational meeting, starting at 7:30 p.m. Both meetings will be held in the Waterford High School library.
