“An Economist Walks into a Brothel” author to headline lecture

Approaching economics from the form of storytelling is how Marietta College hopes to entice local attendance at the annual Milton Freidman Lecture next month.

Allison Shrager, author of “An Economist Walks into a Brothel,” will arrive in Marietta Feb. 3 to speak not only with the institution’s students but the public at large at the free lecture in the McDonough Center at 7 p.m.

“I read her book and what a catchy title that was,” said Professor Greg Delemeester. “The way she approaches risk in this book is kind of by stealth.”

This event is free and open to the public. Schrager, who is a co-founder of LifeCycle Finance Partners, LLC, will speak about “Managing risk in an uncertain economy: What we can learn from surfers, studs and sex workers.”

LifeCycle Finance Partners is a risk advisory firm that develops innovative technology solutions to finance retirement.

“When people think about economics and risk, they think about beating the stock market, but risk management is about so much more–anytime you make a decision, you don’t know all of the ways it could turn out,” said Shrager. “We all face more risk and uncertainty, and risk management tools are just as important to put into use whether you’re a small business owner, a student or a farmer.”

Shrager, who said Friday she’s excited to join the college for the annual event, has never been to Ohio before.

“But my way of learning is through people and connecting their stories, that’s what I loved when I was writing this book,” she explained.

She’ll also be the guest speaker for the Feb. 4 Mid-Ohio Valley Economic Roundtable, which Delemeester said is open to members and their guests.

“But there’s no test at these events, you don’t have to be a math whiz,” he laughed. “Economics isn’t just dollars and cents on the stock market, it’s all around us. The roundtable is designed to promote discussion and keep people fully engaged in the debates and critical issues of the time.”

The roundtable luncheon will be held at the Grand Pointe Convention Center in Vienna. It will be followed by events in March with author Oren Cass and in April with West Virginia University President Gordon Gee.
