The Marietta Natural History Society presents “Better than You Thought: The Ohio River and Efforts to Save It” at 7 p.m. Thursday in room 150 of the Rickey Science Center on the Marietta College campus. Ranger Michael Schramm of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge will tell the story of how this landscape developed and the evolving human uses, from historic times through the present, shape the challenges faced by those hoping to restore and conserve the region’s natural wonders. The next MNHS presentation will be on Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. Marty Seufer will discuss Williamstown’s designation as a Bee City.

The Washington County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet Jan. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Washington County Public Library, 615 Fifth St., in the lower level meeting room. No speaker is planned and members are encouraged to bring family research experiences or items significant to their family history. Visitors are always welcome at the meetings and free parking is available on the street and in the adjacent parking lot. The facility is handicapped accessible.

Family & Children First will sponsor the free 14-week Incredible Years Preschool Basic Program for parents of children 3-6 years of age. Class sessions will be held Mondays, Feb. 3-May 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ely Chapman Education Foundation, 403 Scammel St., Marietta. The program concentrates on strengthening children’s social skills and school readiness skills, using praise and incentives to encourage cooperative behavior, and positive discipline techniques. O’Neill Center will host a breakfast club beginning Jan. 27 every morning from 10 to 11 a.m. A guest speaker from The Ohio State University Extension office will visit once per month. This club is free of charge. Call 740-373-3914 to reserve a seat.
