Bopping to the top, students of Marietta High School are launching their musical debut tonight, beginning at 7 p.m.

The 38-member cast has worked for months on their stage adaptation of the beloved Disney show, “High School Musical,” which includes the well-known songs “Stick to the Status Quo” and “What Time Is It?” alongside nine student crew members.

The show will host three performances in the Marietta High School Auditorium with Saturday’s performance also at 7 p.m. and Sunday’s performance at 2 p.m.

“It’s been such an important story to me since I was such a little kid,” said Victoria Humphrey, 17, of Marietta, on Thursday.

Humphrey plays the blonde, animated icon of the musical, Sharpay.

The Disney favorite will be performed in the high school auditorium on Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. along with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday.

“I’ve loved ‘High School Musical’ and the characters since I was 5 years old, and the fact that I get to play my favorite character in my very last high school show is so special to me,” she added.

The lead basketball star Troy Bolton is played by Nathan Smith, 17, of Marietta, who noted that since auditions in November, the most challenging portions to master have been various dance routines.

“A lot of energy and power goes into every song that we sing, and it’s very taxing on your voice, especially for the leads… (and) anyone who has seen the movie knows how much dancing there is, and it’s just as big of a part of the show as the singing is,” he exclaimed. “Overall, I’m really excited, and I hope everyone that can has a chance to come out and see the show.”

Macy Kendall, 18, of Marietta, plays Bolton’s love interest in the production, Gabriella.

“I’m really excited to see everyone’s reaction who has grown up with ‘High School Musical’ in their life,” said Kendall. “The hardest thing for me has been probably the choreography or the mixed emotions she gives when she goes from mad to sad to frustrated.”

And the show has proved a welcome technical challenge not only for the cast, but also crew members taking on more responsibilities behind the scenes.

“It’s crazy backstage,” student stage manager Reed Holt, 17, of Marietta, said Thursday between classes. “We have cast members changing costumes multiple times, but we also have all of the moving parts of the set.”

Student lighting manager Rylee Lee, 17, of Oak Grove, likewise feels the pressure of so many moving parts of the show.

“This is my first year with the backstage crew instead of acting, “said Lee, a senior. “But learning all of this, where the lights are and when to use different colors to set the mood has been so cool. It’s opened up my thinking to consider pursuing stage management in college.”

Both Lee and Holt said the precision of timing is key to producing an excellent performance, and both said they’re excited to see the crowds enjoy all of the hard work of their team.

Tickets for the show are $10 per person, available one hour before each performance, and doors open at the auditorium 45 minutes before each show.
