WATERFORD — Digital signs, graduation and outside classes were discussed at Monday night’s meeting of the Wolf Creek Local Board of Education.

Waterford High Principal Suellen Coleman said they are still working on the details, but a traditional graduation will be held this spring.

“But it will be limited seating and limited capacity,” she said.

The school board also approved a resolution allowing the Waterford High prom to be held May 8 at Camp Hervida.

“And the FFA banquet is coming up next week,” she explained. “We will be live streaming that event because it again is limited capacity.”

As part of its $60K for 6 campaign, the Marietta Community Foundation raised $10,000 for each of the six school districts in the county.

Coleman said the money allocated to Wolf Creek will be used to add WiFi boosters for outside both the high school and elementary school.

“We’ll have some additional picnic tables built and a couple of other things so that teachers can take their classes outside,” she explained. “You can take your Chromebooks and be able to distance outside so they can have nice breaks and still continue to work.”

Janis Doak, member of the Waterford PTO, spoke on behalf of the group to get approval to purchase a digital sign to be placed in front of the high school.

“I personally have a little sign envy with the Fort Frye sign and I’m on Main Street all the time. I grew up on Main Street,” Doak explained. “I love my school system and I would really like to see a nice sign in front of our school to represent who we are.”

She said the sign would have information for both the elementary and high schools. The PTO is working on getting quotes for the sign, but expect it to cost $17,000 to $20,000.

“And also to do a little bit of landscaping around it to make it look nice,” she added.

As a fundraiser for the project, the PTO will hold Bingo at 2 p.m. April 25 at the Waterford fairgrounds. The cost is $20 per person if a chair and table are brought, and $25 per person if the PTO furnishes chairs and tables.

Superintendent Doug Baldwin said the lighting project has been started. Work at the elementary school is well over 30 percent finished and work in the gym and cafeteria would be done this week.

“Once that’s all completed, events like graduation, eighth grade promotion and kindergarten graduation … they’re being planned,” Baldwin said, adding the events would look a little different, but they are in the planning stages.

“I think somebody mentioned earlier (Monday night) about getting back a little bit more normal with field trips and we’ve given some guidelines to teachers,” he noted. “So, hopefully, our kids will get to experience some field trips we used to do last year, and we’re starting to make a few slight, slight changes here and there, things to get our kids back a little bit more normal.”
