Athens conducts an Offender Compliance Operation

ATHENS, Ohio — On Oct. 8, the Athens County Sheriff’s Office conducted a county-wide offender compliance operation with the assistance of the United States Marshals Service Southern Ohio Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team (SOFAST) and the Ohio Adult Parole Authority (APA).

Approximately 25 law enforcement officers conducted the joint operation which focused on verifying the residence of sex offenders, arson offenders, and violent offenders registered in Athens County. During the compliance operation, teams were able to check the residence of every offender registered in Athens County.

A total of 88 compliance checks were conducted.

Of those, seven offenders were verified non-compliant and eight remain under investigation.

The Sheriff’s Office will be submitting felony charges on those offenders who were determined non-compliant.

“We are extremely grateful for the assistance of both SOFAST and APA,” said Sheriff Rodney Smith.

“It is our goal to keep the citizens of Athens County informed about offenders and their whereabouts. We will not tolerate non-compliance.”

The Sheriff’s Office would also like to thank Walmart of Athens, Walmart Manager Keith Adams, and McHappy’s Bake Shoppe for their generous donation of food for the personnel who conducted the operation.
